  1. Good reminder for vigilance if spending any amount of time in woodlands . There is a serious tick-borne encephalitis virus which is spreading in central Europe and there is no cure . It can be prevented by immunisation and i would urge anyone working over here to get it .

  2. My Desert Eagle in brushed satin nickle.

Entirely impractical weapon, makes me grin like a loon every time I fire it though.

It's not impractical .. you can shoot bears with it or get ready for a zombie apocalypse :laugh1:

  3. Can you install from ground? And yes same as you...didn't want the pulley saver so thought this would be the answer. So do you have the FimblClimb or FimbleSaver?

I've never installed it from the ground , don't see why you couldn't but it's rare to get the final top anchor first go , so I just install it when I get there . Fimblsaver I have . Another good thing about is retrieving it, you don't need to worry about smacking it off a hard standing or rock like the little lightweight alloy pulleys .

  4. Why do people buy these sort of things when all it seems to replace is a Prussik loop? The traditional being cheaper and likely more reliable?

A traditional prussik you are climbing ' one-sided' so to speak . When using a device like the zig zag you climb hand over hand symmetrical with your body . Theoretically this should be easier on your limbs ..

  5. So when the chain on your chainsaw comes loose you just leave it loose until it comes off!! then blame the saw manufacturer for something that could have been prevented. Yes I agree you do have a lot to check but ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure your kit is maintained and ready for use each time you climb. Your climbing helmet is one of the items which does require more checks than other pieces of kit and often it is just taken for granted that its OK. Sorry for trying to promote and encourage safe practice.

Checking screws on helmets every day I'm sorry doesn't fall into my safety check before i climb . How many people on here were climbing on the zig zag ( life support) and didn't realise it was compromised ? Climbers fault you are saying ? What's the deal with the ' I'm sorry for promoting safe practise' you addressing imbeciles or something ?

  6. i am just giving the correct advise on preventive maintenance of equipment to help resolve future issues.

It's not the correct advice . Commercial climbers have enough life support stuff to check on top of carrying a screwdriver around ? Correct advice would be to say the manufacturer is aware of the issue and will fix it imminently .

  7. Hi! I moved to Finland nearly 3 years ago with my Finnish girlfriend. We live in Kokkola, its about 2 hours south of Oulu. Tree care is pretty much non exsistant in Northern Finland. Most arborists are in and around the Helsinki/Tampere areas. I think the reason for this is purely that there is little demand here. As someone mentioned before the further north you go the smaller the trees are. It seems that every town has some old boy with a cherry picker who will prune or cut down trees. I had to go self employed and start doing my own thing because there were just no jobs. When i tell people i climb trees they think I'm crazy :D even the big forestry firms like UPM don't use arborists up here. Slowly the bigger city local authorities are taking an interest in tree care but there is not so much work. Trees don't grow so quick out here . There is one arborist in Oulu but i think he's just a one man band. You could check out the Finnish Tree Care Association 'Suomen Puunhoidon Yhdistys '. I don't want to put a downer on your plans, the country is great but the language is a nightmare!!! The south is probably better for tree care opportunities.

Hi Tommy thankyou for the reply , it's good to here from someone with first hand experience , although all replies are much appreciated .

My intention would be to go self employed , I really don't want to work for someone else anymore if I can help it , although initially it may be a needs must thing .Maybe I would need something else apart from treework.

Yeh I've started learning a bit of Finnish and think it may take me about 30 years to learn !!

If you're looking for another climber this year ( about summer time I'm recuperating from a knee op ) feel free to give me a PM and I can come up no problem , with all own kit . Kind regards :thumbup1:

  8. I can't speak for finland really, but I can speak for the neighbour, Sweden.

We have one school in the very very south end, and I think they've educated around 150 arborists in the last 10 years (before then we had nothing).

I know there are a couple of arborist companies in and around stockholm, which is less than halfway up sweden, but I don't really know of any working much higher up than that.

also, Finland doesn't have a lot of cities up north, with no cities there's rarely call for arborists in my experience.

I was thinking of Oulu which has a population of about 190,000 .. That's as far north as is practical on my reckoning on tree size /population ratio if that makes sense ..

  9. It's what I started out with in 2003 , great little saw , basic maintenance and can't ever remember it letting me down . Gave it to a friend as a present and believe it's still going .

  10. What's all this ' everyone's mortified ' business ?

I've just seen this and to be honest thought Ken Block looked awesome .

I personally could see nothing wrong with it and I'm a passionate military services recognition guy . :confused1:
