  1. before you even contemplate buying yourself a "welder" find out about about any welding courses at your local college. a lot of what you see posted/written is so called "experts" that cuoldnt stick two bits of metal together if there lifes depended on it!. welding is a skill learbned over many years and has various forms, thin sheet metal ie :car bodies, a mig giving 25-140 amps and .6mm steel wire, at the other end of the scale, steel plate inches thick, a 500+ amp mig and 2mm wire, it comes down to horses for courses. you can weld steel, stainless and ally with a mig, just use the right filler wire and gas combination, your only limited by skill. should you choose stick/arc, great for thicker steel, a pain for thin stuff, and not a lot of use for much else.(yes you can get rods for stainless, cast iron, and even ally, but these are are pain in the ass to use, and are beyond the skill levels of joe average). tig machines are, depending on manufacturer, either brilliant or crap, require a reasonable skill to set up and operate, and are expensive to run. if your planing to stick to steel, up to 1/2" a good invertor driven mig is the boy, be willing to pay for it, names that spring to mind, miller, r-tech, lorch, and fronius, these are all expensive, but the back up and reliability more than make up for itand the best advice about welding is practice, practice, and more practice.
  2. does this country not support freedom of speech?, he can say what he likes, and if you dont like it, tough, your problem... not his. some people should get a life and try to survive in the real world, not the cotton wool place they seem to think it is
  3. forgot to add, carters hitch gives you a 3:1 advantage, more if you double stack them!
  4. carters hitch, the knot of choice, just doesnt work to well on some of the more modern synthetic ropes, usually needs another half hitch to lock it from sliding out
  5. what did we wear 30 years ago, before ballistics and saw boots?, was it really that dangerous, or shock, horror, did we actually use that strang idea of common sense and not actually put ourselfs in a risky situation where if the saw kicked back it would hit any part of our body, seem to remember being taught that saws were dangerous and to treat them with respect. PPE them days was a warm pair of overalls and a good pair of boots or wellies if it was wet, if you had to climb you wore what was best suited to the job, "dont" know how we ever survived.
  6. cos if your doing 30 in a tractor yor breaking the law stupid
  7. if you care to check priorities on the road youll find its cloven hooved animals with a drover, on all but duall carriageways and motorways, that have priority, then everyone else, horses, cyclists and dog walkers have no special rights there just another road user, and its time some of them were told so!!
  8. it doesnt matter whether you drive an old fergie, or a ultra modern thing, ALL tractors are not supposed to exceed 20mph by LAW, it very clear on this subject, the only exceptions being vehicles fitted with 4 wheel suspension, brakes on all 4 wheels, and mechanicly coupled steering, ie unimogs and fastracks, if you are stopped at more than 20mph, you will be prosecuted. and as for you tractor drivers that seem to find it a game to see how many cars you can hold up, does the phrase " due care and consideration" mean anything, apart from a dangerous driving on your license with all that that brings, a little bit of consideration costs nothing, and as has been said before, "what goes around comes around", its a lot truer than you think.
  9. like offgrid chris, i use an alaskan to chop the really big stuffup into sizes for my m7, but in reality i find i dont do this very often as the m7 will handle some surprising sizes, youll find 24" well within its capibility, its the overall weight thats the killer, they say 1/2 tonne, but speak to the logosol folk at bentham and theyll say its capable of a "lot" more i find the only problem comes with length, with my mill i can do just over 6mtrs (with an extension fitted). decide on a budget and see whats available, check on you tube, theres some really good stuff on there. im slightly biased in favour of logosol, but ive got the chainsaw driven log moulder/ planer fitted as well so i can board the timber with 1 finished face straight of the mill, makes a big difference(only 9" though) . have a look on the logosol site and see where the nearest mill user is to you and see if you can arange to see it working, its surprising
  10. if you have a disco, or a range rover, and towed a loaded 3500kg ifor trailer, because the towing vehicle wasnt a commercial, you didnt need a tacho, thats the exemption thats gone, doesnt just apply to "commercial" tow vehicles
  11. strange weather here to, stove ws lit in september, but its out again cos its to warm again
  12. from december 4th, anything towing a trailer with a GTW over 3500kgs will require a tacho if its for "quote" hire or reward, there are still going to be exceptions, but these are few and far between. its going to affect a great many folk and there will be lots of **** to sort out, our "leaders" have decided to bring us into line with europe without asking, again, and done away with what was called the "small trailer exclusion" designed to help out the small buisness and one man operator, so once again weve been shafted by a non elected goverment.... go democracy!!!
  13. im like bob, i run stihl chains on all my saws, i prefer them, find they stay sharp just a little longer between sharpening, buts maybe just me!!
  14. get yourself down to the police station, demand your property back, ask on whos authority they carried out an illegal search of your vehicle, and on what grounds, regester an official complaint againstr the officers concerned, and demand an apology fron the senior police officer. these days the police seem to think they can do as they please, you have to keep slapping them back into place and remind them there duty is to serve the public, not do as they like, do not under any circumstances take any excuses from them, they are the ones at fault and dont let them forget it.
  15. yes, you have a freeflow return, count the no. of connectors you have on the back or front, 2 for each spool valve plus a freeflow rtn, if you have a factory 3point linkage fitted you loose the red circuit on the front(switched by the valve on the back for outputs)then up to another 3 depending on spool valves in cab, green, yellow, and blue cicuits plus your return, normally tagged black. your normall pump should give you 45lpm at 230 bar if you need any more info pm me
  16. three factors affect your choice of splitter, the diameter of the ram, the pressure of the supply, and the strength of the structure, you will need to build your own to maximise all three. I had to build my own to split some real twisted knotty stuff that had been lying a while, uses a lift ram from a D9 cat, a pump from a slide-back car transporter, various other bits, calculations say it puts out around 40 ton running off the pto on the mog and ive seen it flex 1 1/2" plate on the base splitting some weird knotty crap, oh and it somtimes bursts 4wire hoses!
  17. cant seem to find a translation for gaelic, or lalands scots, never mind doric, so us northern tribes aint covored....lol
  18. at the end of the day, do YOU feel happy and confident in the lad working the proccesor, and does he feel happy, if this is the case go for it, As ive stated on here before HSE rules are ADVISORY and very few are actualy legaly enforcable i mean where does it state in law you cannot operate a tractor pto till you are 18? what about all the young farmers working on the land, I know i was running pto driven kit as soon as i could connect the shafts, but back before 1998 we were expected to have that strange thing called COMMON SENSE that the jobsworths seem to think doesnt apply now, ask the lad if he knows about the dangerous bits on the kit, and to show you, if he can then hes good to go
  19. give ian at Ayrshire Timber Manufacturing a bell, he's got some belters made out of spalted beech, theyll seat 8, and are in 1 piece -01290332341
  20. looks very much like youve got yourself a foresian rack mill, built by William Reid of Forres sometime in the 1950's, these are amazing machinesand just predate the introduction of the bandsaw mills. no two are the same as every one was built to special order and have some unique features, it looks like your one has the secondary saw blade on the back opposite side, some have, some dont, some even have two racks, does your one have the extraction fan system run off the main drive to the saw.it looks in really good condition, Iknow all these things about these saws as i have one myself, unfourtunatley not in as good of a condition but undergoing a restoration
  21. if you choose to ignore the 20mph limit. and get caught, you open a whole can of worms, if your trailer isnt an airbraked one, with dual cicuit brakes and abs, construction and use ticket, your trailer tyres, rated for 50k, £1000 per tyre and 3 points each, insurance invalid, 3-6 points plus fine still think exceeding your 20mph in your big fancy tractor is worth it, yes VOSA and the traffic cops are starting to clamp down on speeding tractors, especially round harvest time with so many contractors employing youngsters to drive them. and just as a thought, they sell cars that can do more than 70mph, no-one is forcing you to exceed this either....lol
  22. if you go for a tractor, your restricted to a max speed of 20mph, irrespective of air or hydraulic brakes, a unimog or fastrac will allow to tow at faster speeds, but only on air brakes (provided they are sized as per commercial ) you could go for a ex mil bedford and go ag machine, (as long as you "cut" the timber you load, and then transport it to "your " base of operations for further work, you are fine
  23. under powered useless piles of crap, produced for utilities companys who wouldnt pay the price for a real unimog, but wanted to look like they were buying the best to impress the shareholders....... a "large" 4x4 chassis and all the heavy bits, but fitted with an underpowered sprinter engine, leave them for the muppets that dont know any better
  24. only one point, thresh hold comes from the batten placed in front of the barn door where the hand threshing took place , to prevent the grain being blown out with the chaff whilst preparing the grain harvest, otherwise very informative, cheers
  25. why, in this litigation happy society, are retailers still getting away with charging vat on safety equipment that should be zero rated, can anyone answer this question for me?
