  1. The split never heals, the best that could happen would be the callus growth gradually merges to start a complete new ring after several years, this callus growth will be "better" wood than the original (denser, less vessels) but it would still contain the split wood, and any infections, inside it.

I know very little of bracing, I last practiced it, job specced by boss, in about 1976, it would never pay unless a specimen tree or a high value target and in this case the wood/shelterbelt needs thinning.

Over the years I have come across an occassional tree with dangling wires from a failed brace where the supported structure is still intact

thanks, i was thinking cobra as opposed to cable as its non invasive. i thought it may stop the split spreading in storms etc and may help the callus form as it would reduce movement of the split, atleast thats what i thought :001_tt2:

  2. Hi all

we had this ash failure to sort out today. in the close up picture it looks like wall 4 of codit forming? this would suggest that the tree partly failed a while back and has been waiting to go for a while? no fungal brackets etc visible, just a weak union i think. any thoughts appreciated. thanks, Gary

  3. been to look at 2 rowan today for removal. 1 is completely dead and the other is only just alive but is coming out as well. the owner said both have gone in the last year and appeared healthy before. i know its a bit vague but any reasons as to why both would die so suddenly. others in area appear fine. thanks, Gary

  4. You've just redeemed yourself...:001_tt2:

I was just looking for a bit of a windup on the night, thought you'd come back with something there n then and we'd carry it on for a few post's....:laugh1::001_smile:

haha nice one, bit slow on that one

  5. What do you class as "shite" mpg? I've got one on my Ranger Super Cab and get 31mpg.

turns out iv got a dicky fuel gauge, has been showing empty with 20 liters left in the tank. iv only just got the truck so only just found this out. i was working it out at 18mpg! like i say thankfully the fuel gauge is dicky and its actually doing 27. last time i trust a fuel guage :001_tt2:

  6. stuff some string into the piston then using a srew driver as a drift, place the screw driver on the indents on the clutch and give it a few sharp blows with a mallet untill it spins of. Can't remember whether the 395 can be undone with a socket or not.

it looks like it can be as the spanner thingy fits on the middle? tried using a stihl piston stop and turning this but had no joy. i thought the stihl one might be different but thought id give it ago anyway :blushing:
