  1. Just watched some of the video , yes this is America but surely once someone starts climbing and working in the tree this is Arboriculture not forestry, most forestry is ground based! Wearing part on the five year old attachment this again would be highlighted through a thorough examination!

Use of two flip lines to back up to allow snagging would be solved by use of climbing line and also a lot easier and quicker to descend the tree if needed!

  2. That is what is known as a s##t job why is it there are so many people/ company's out there that call themselves tree surgeons or arborists yet they allways do a sub standard job if they are going to call themselves arborist then be one, anyone can lop a tree like that and say look at me I'm a tree surgeon! There is so much sub standard tree work I have seen on my travels across the uk i dread to think, alot of the timeouts down to lack of experience, constant pressure from bosses who have under priced and tenders that are so tight on budgets speed is of the essence! Quantity is the key point not quality and alot of trees I have seen on my travels have been done by approved contractors! I personally wouldn't call them approved going by some of the trees I have seen done but then you get some out there who do an excellent job! Private clients need education take time to talk through the ins and outs of the operation intended and explain the benefits to the tree and long term management!

  3. Yep, Big Ben (against little ben) blew a fuse - and they all went home early after a very bad day. Not that Iain was bothered, he's just moved into his flat:thumbup:

I was planning to go to Oxford Wednesday and do some oak felling on Shotover hill but gave it a miss, so went on Thursday and had a good day. No chipping just fell and cut into 10ft lenghts and use a tractor with a large grap and stack for a mega fire - if we can light it:confused1:

Iain loves his tree work, really happy lad since he started with Ben a year ago, he doesn't go on Arbtalk much, uses 'gravity always wins'.

I thought it was you, nice to meet up sort of, yes your right your son is a nice lad I assessed him last year for his cs30&31 and work with him on occasions a piece of metal is just one of those things that happen it was prob shitty ground and horrid day, worse things happen at sea,may meet you one day take care!

    Chris

  4. Still on candles in the west country? only joking:001_tt2:

Working on a hill by Oxford today, windy but ok. Yesterday, my son was working in the rain, landy stuck with a chipper on in deep mud at the back of a church, working in heavy rain until a piece of rusty metal fence rail went into the chipper, 'rain with added sparks' boss swore = time to go home early.

Locally in North Oxfordshire - flooded fields everywhere, some roads flooded, never as bad as some areas. Dogs love it, sticks and water games.

Your not Iain's dad are you! My friends chipper had a metal stake go through it yesterday!

  5. I found a Butt plug whilst doing some work for Sainsburys , ended up going through the chipper, and on another occasion found a dildo in a carrier bag !

It's amazing what you find whilst cutting hedges back but it seems quite apt that you found a dildo when your forum name carries the same name as a make of dildo!!!

  6. I don't use them.

Why spend 200 quid on boots when a decent pair of work boots will set you back 40 or 50 quid.

Kiwis don't use them in NZ and I haven't bothered to replace mine since working there about 6 years ago.

    Your thoughts please chaps:001_smile:

I come on arbtalk on the odd occasion just to get a bite normally from landrover folk but then I read a thread like this! There really is alot of people out there who have not got a clue what they are talking about and should not be let loose within this dangerous industry! Where possible I will always try to promote health and safety and industry best practice, when the approach of "why waste money on ppe " then all I can say is you are prats! When working on your own land do as you wish but when industry working there is certain acts to adhere to where possible formally the health and safety at work act then on puwer loler ppe regs 92 ! I have seen and heard of many incidents involving chainsaws, why take the non ppe approach it's common Sense really or are some people that stupid that they don't understand this! Type a instead of type c again risk assessment dictated, chainsaw use wearing normally work boots not really a good control measures!!

  7. My l200 has out performed many a landrover build quality is better and there cheaper to buy, comfort is higher! You see the old landy geeks with stickers saying "one life live it"

My moto Is "one life live it buy Japanese and don't spend the weekend fixing it" landrover owners really deep down understand stand this as there scrambling about in the dirt and oil and were off working or living a life!!!! Landrover over priced mecanho set!!!!

  8. you'd just need to make sure you leave something that they trip when they enter to let you know someones visited...shouldnt be hard

If we leave objects lying around and the criminals break in hurt themselves even though they have broken in were open to be claimed against! Like the couple who came home found there Alsatian on the floor stuggling to breathe as it had chewed off a couple of fingers from an intruder the dog had to be destroyed and compensation claim by criminal found in favour of the thieving scumbag! Where is justice today gone right down the bog troff!!

  9. Why did you need to climb looked like there was enough space to winch it away from the trunk just looks like it was play time with gadgets and I'll positioned lowering points!

    PS nice tree seen bigger!!

  10. Can anyone tell me at what point I need an operators licence and tachograph? I am tying myself up in knots trying to understand the rules about 3.5t, 7.5t. Or 3.5t with 3.5t trailer on the back. Are there other regs to consider? Will I need 6 weekly servicing from a registered garage? Will I have to pay for an extortionately priced tax disc? aaaaahhhh! HELP!

    thanks

All quite grey area so just keep on trucking!!!

  11. No wonder it took the groundsman so long when sending multi stem / mess of branches down to him! The climber could do with taking a little more time over positioning of lowering points as in the video it shows it's just a matter of time beforehe gets lumped by a branch with the butt sections coming in a little to close for comfort!
