Here in Huddersfield shooting incidents are a weekly occurance and now dont even make the local rag never mind local news

 

One of the reasons me and a firearms officer hold a firearms demonstration at our show, is to educate the public and kids as to how firearms are used, the reason we have them is to show how dangerous and powerful they are in the wrong hands or when mis-used our demonstration is the most popular event at the show, even to firearms holders. But most of all to educate the local populous that there are legal guns out there and introduce them to the reasoning behind them

 

I for one have campaigned for courses to be passed similar to NPTC courses before certificates are issued simply because there should be a bar set for gun handling, safety and ballistic awareness.

 

Over 7000 firearms related incidents last year, yet one incident in ten years of a legally held firearm and there's massive interest and the public baying for legislation.

I agree totally Dean, I've lost track of local articles on shootings going on in Huddersfield, Halifax and Bradford but they barely get covered on the local news let alone national - With this incident in Cumbria [ not far from where I actually grew up ] the Media are just being a bunch of bloody Ghouls capitalising on peoples fears of firearms and the '' What if '' scenario of a mad gunman. Not to mention because its so many in one go it goes from being just an isolated incidence in the Media's eyes to being a national story because so many died.

With Firearms, I was taught from a young age to always respect them because the second you don't someone can be either seriously hurt or killed, also did Cadets for a few years and before we even touched a GP Rifle/LSW/GPMG we had to know all its features back to front, all the safety measures and even before shooting we had to be cleared - taught properly how to do it so I'm fully with you that if people wish to use firearms there should be some form of training certification to show they are competent and not idiots toting a dangerous bit of kit.

On a bit of a tangent/tinfoil hat note - Is it just me or is the timing of this conveniant with this shooting after what happened in Palestine with some Brits and other nationalities being killed by the IDF on that Aid barge ? Just stinks of Agenda setting by the Media again to divert our attention away from the IDF butchering unarmed people because the outcry from that was getting really bad, what happened in Cumbria was horrible and very tragic but it just feels like the Media really jumped on this bandwagon to sway the general public away from what happened in International Waters - thats my tuppence.

Thanks guys for all the info/thoughts - It's good to know that Veterans such as yourselves share info like this to rookies such as myself and any others that come into the job. Will keep it firmly in mind while pushing myself. Did hear that too about tiredness/fatigue being the worst enemy to have along with dehydration.

From my perspective its a Bit of a Catch 22 with the saying no policy because in the back of my mind since I'm new to the job, I can't help but think will this knacker up my references for other companies and will I get a bad reputation with other firms if I say no to one employer and they all talk to each other. I don't mind pushing my boundaries a bit at a time and getting more comfortable in the job but if I get asked to do something way out of my depth its a tricky situation to be put in - although having said that all the firms I have spoken to seem very friendly and genuine not wanting to push a newstarter too far. Just hope I can land myself more permanent work with a decent gang of blokes and avoid some of the cowboy outfits out there.

What would you more experienced guys say to that ? Wouldn't mind hearing your input on it as any info would be greatly appreciated in terms of what to look out for and when to walk.

Ah it looked like a good job you did on the Birch, I know how you feel on the height/weight thing, I'm 6'3 and about 12 stone so not exactly the biggest of blokes either but guess it makes it more fun/challenging to get stuck into a big job like that.

I'm hoping to do my Climbing courses maybe later this year, want to cut my teeth on the ground first and get a general feel for it but I do admit the climbing side of it looks great fun.

I can't really take the piss though to be fair arb mate - I'm new to the job so I'm sure I'll do a few howlers and if so I'll grab some pics and post them too, fairs fair in pisstaking At least it worked out for the best and no one got injured from Barbers chair though.

Ah least you managed to fix it mate, remember on my 2nd Assessment for my 31 had an old fella who was training with us make a real botch of his Hung up tree, his idea of '' feathering '' on the hinge after his boring cut take nearly 50% of the tree from the side - he only decided to tell me after he shouted for me to give him a hand and walked right through the line of fire at the side ! Wasn't too happy to say the least

Now you tell me ! Nah if you do get other jobs on in the future that don't need a full set of extra hands/saw give me a shout please, any experience I can build up in the job is worth its weight in gold for me.

Decided to update my post -

Had a think on it and for a lot of you guys in the local Area [brighouse, Huddersfield even Leeds ] If you'd like to test me out on a trial day first before wanting to subby some work my way I'd be happy to give it a go so then at least you've met me and seen how I work.

Ah.. sounds bad saying it but really not surprised with Fartown, but then again where I am [ Used to be called Brackenhall I think ? ] It was a bit like Beirut and still can be here n there. Shame really a life being wasted like that but guess they just want to aspire to be thought as hard men and the cocked up part about it all is a shortage of tradesmen in this country yet tonnes of young unemployed.

I'm NPTC CS30/31 Qualified [ TKF Training Holmfirth ] and looking for work in Huddersfield and the surrounding Area, don't mind travelling for work. I have my own PPE and Husqy 353 [18 inch guidebar].

I'm new to the job but not afraid of some hard graft, have experience in a variety of trade jobs from Mechanics to Bricklaying/Labouring and as an Electricians mate. I'm also pretty good at picking up information quick and hope to get my Climbers licence later this year.
