  1. My better half has been learning some stained glass techniques at evening classes. Between us we've just finished this.......
  2. I'm using one too and it's great. In winter we do a fair bit of river clearance work with a 21ton slew with a cropper on. Often the driver is working blind but with the PTT I can direct him in to hold stuff before I start to cut. That way we don't lose trees down the river. In the slew he wears a modified pair of ear defenders with PTT. Nobody gets a sore throat and even if we don't make eye contact for hours we all know the job's being done safely.
  3. Bought myself a 'Helko Vario 2000' late last year. It's not a very traditional looking tool but it works well and I really like using it. I'd recommend it but not lend it:001_tongue: Anyone else tried one ?
  4. I've got the tickets you need and may be able to help you out if you can't get on a course as quickly as you would like.
  5. Is she the bananagirl that was climbing for Hi-Line in Congresbury today ?
  6. Not sure he's the thickest plank around, as I'm sure he's worth a few bob, but I get your drift.
  7. This is not a claim to fame, but a search really. Does anyone know if a plank has ever been milled that claims to be 'Britain's longest plank' ? I'm aware of the world records that have been set using Logosol mills, but they have all been outside the UK. How long is your longest chainsaw-milled plank ?
  8. Can't offer any advice, but I've noticed loads of eucalypts around Somerset turning brown over the last few weeks, including one in my garden. I was wondering if there was a disease or infestation going around.
  9. An arbmate has been asked to take down the remaining stem of a walnut which has about 12' of straight trunk and max diameter of about 2'. The customer says that the twin stem that was removed within the last couple of years was sold for about a thousand pounds. Is he having a larf ?? Is anyone prepared to make a rough offer, collection from North Somerset or negotiable delivery ? Thanks.
  10. I'm wondering how much, to the nearest 50kg, a 1m cube bag will weigh with seasoned hardwood in it ? I've been thinking about a little Hiab to load both truck and trailer so may need to reach up to 10 feet with a bag suspended. Any ideas amongst the educated ?
  11. Thanks for being brave enough to post your terrible news. Lost for words. Sorry.
  12. :001_tt2:Any old driftwood - for crazy folk in garden centres:001_tt2:
  13. I've got an old pair of Oregon Greens that are just a bit too tight for me. I'm usually a size 9 or 9 1/2, or 43 /44 in european sizes. Where abouts are you ? I'm just south of Clevedon in North Somerset, about 3 miles off the M5. I think they are a class 2 boot, I'll have a look for them tomorrow if you're interested.

  14. That Disco' in your avatar, did it go forwards or backwards from where you parked it ?
  15. Thank you, and the same to you and yours. Merry Christmas everyone, be careful out there.
  16. Does this count as a 'Wrong tool for the job' lunge ?
  17. I photographed a carved Christmas Tree while on holiday near Durham last year. Got around to my own attempt today -
  18. Good job there, I'm feeling inspired. Was wondering what to get Her-that-thinks-she's-in-charge for Christmas. Can feel a little moonlight whittling coming on.
  19. I got my better half a pair of fleece lined riggers 3 years ago, she loves them. She is a bit odd though, she married me !!
  20. I have a 011AVT that I've still not listed on eBay. Spares or repair only, if I remember correctly the problem was a major crack in a casting which was allowing chain oil to leak into the middle of the saw. Not sure what difference the 'T' makes, but if you need a heap of used spares we could discuss further. Angus.
  21. My friend who lost the glove would have had to leap at the chipper to try and prevent his glove going through. As I said, he hardly felt it go, so stopping it was never an option. I don't have an exact time but I reckon it takes under 2 seconds for brash to travel the length of the chipper mouth, that's not a lot of reaction + action time when something goes wrong. I'm not sure how I'd practice an emergency stop with a gnarly limb going through at the same time. I've had chipper training, but I don't recall any sort of 'stop when I slap the dashboard' type scenario. Just something to think about.
  22. I burn as much alder as I can get . Split cord lengths as soon as you can to stop the wood turning pithy and just pile it up to season. Rings and thicker cords are a joy to axe when well seasoned, my kids love doing them for me. They leave me all the gnarly oak and elm. I start a fire with seasoned willow if the house is cold and just keep throwing the chumps in for half an hour. When the room has warmed up change to a slower burning wood.
  23. Any work glove with a similar cuff potentially presents a similar risk, and when its -3 you'll not catch me feeding a chipper with no gloves. We are provided with PPE and expected to use it. Chainsaw gloves happen to be the warmest that are suitable (?) for the work that was being done. What do people wear on their hands to feed a chipper with mixed brash and bramble in cold weather when using a saw is frequent enough to not switch it off ? My friend has a border-line white finger condition so can not afford to be getting cold fingers.
  24. Was feeding armfulls of willow + alder brash into a chipper earlier this week when the guy I'm working with waves his hand at me, minus chainsaw glove. He said he hardly felt it go, his hands are on the slim side, but the cuff on the glove had caught in the brash and pulled it off, straight into the chipper. This is all we could find of it. I've been using Efco class 2 gloves lately, just an elasticated cuff similar to the Husky gloves. I'm quite glad as my hand wouldn't come out of a Stihl glove that easily.
  25. Knew a guy who had a teaspoon of Marmite every day at breakfast, said he'd never had a mosi bite in his life, any factual basis for this or just luck??
