We are cutting some lovely 30ish year old coppice that's in rotation. We will coppice the thorn too when we are done and leave oak standards. Great to see a local authority planting and managing hazel.

I was going to ask if you were going. Would have been good to meet.
I didn't compete (never have-probably should), just helped out a bit on the day

Good work, big hedge and windy day!!

Thanks for the replies.
One of our husky saws has far too aggressive a chain too

Good morning, does anyone have any experience with Milwaukee hatchet or similar from other brands please. We are thinking about getting one as it looks like it might be handy tool for clearing out small stuff in awkward spaces prior to hedgelaying and for taking tops off stakes (we will have about 5000 to do this season). We do have a couple of bigger husky battery saws so maybe we should just stick with these?

I know, and they seemed surprised when I told I didn't want to go ahead. Funnily enough a friend took a still in and they did a great job by all accounts!!

I'm not sure what went wrong with mine in the end (I loved them when they came out). It went to dealer for repair, was quoted £1200!!!! and when I said no was given it back in a box and carrier bag as it couldn't have been dismantled any more

We have been using a sherpa and friend has an Iseki that seems good and decent value for money. Seems you get slightly more comfort when you spend a bit more

If only they could be refilled......

We generally do midland or SOE but have done a few 'conservation style'. Some folk don't use any stakes but the sites we had were exposed so used stake every meter or 2 and a few crooks. The stakes do help hold it together as we had some hefty stems. Plus even spaced stake line does look 'tidier'
I do like the south west and welsh hedges that are low non a bank and crooked.
Agreed if it's roadside a staked and bound style would look good and not get blown about

I would say coppice and plant up. Might be worth trying to layer some of the smaller stuff and see if it takes root

Good question. I don't exactly know the answer and have never done accurate enough trials to work it out.
Devon hedges on a bank often remove 80% of the top growth.
I work on the theory of removing the top to the same % I have cut through the stem, so remove 75% of the top if I have cut 75% of the stem, particularly with big old stuff which is very brittle.
My tip of the day, if cutting old big stuff leave until you have "mouse ears" , little leaflets, the sap is rising so the stem is less brittle.
Yeah I found bigger stuff lays so much better late in the season-always risks running out if time though

Geilo is where they are made, its a Ski town in the mountains roughly half way between Bergen and Oslo. Its a nice place and the only industry is the Øyo metal works.
I've been a few times, love the Hardangavidda and wish I learnt Norwegian and move years ago!!

Morning all,
My old man's after a splitting axe and he has a Norwegian book and wants an oyo splitting axe - as photo shows. I've tried to find it, but to no avail. Anyone know if these are not available in UK or discontinued? Thanks in advance.
BestJames
I'm not sure where in the country you are but I plan to be in Geilo area in spring and happy to bring an axe or 2 back to UK

Come to FFF&B ploughing match. Really friendly group. It was where I did my first single comp and the experts are great for advice.
The winner at FFF&B was 3rd at the Nationals in the open, the 2nd was judging, third won the Intermediate Midland , I was 4th and then 2nd so a good standard!
Having said that I could see an improvement in mine between the 2 comps.through practice and knowing what the judges want!
I can only dream, I fear downhill from here!
Thanks for the info, will definitely try for next year then

Having performed ok at the local ploughing match I plucked up courage and went to the Nationals. The idea was not to be last in my class. It all started badly when I arrived to find my plot next to the tents etc so I was viewed by every person who visited. Secondly I had a camera crew parked next to me with some white haired chap sitting on a plastic chair and then doing interviews.
Nothing else for it than to bury my head in the hedge and crack on!
Suffice it to say that it went better than expected and I finished 2nd in class, beaten by the same person who was just above me at the ploughing match.
A good day was had by all and thanks to those who organised it. (I know a couple get on here.)
Nice work. Great to see loads of different styles at the National, I definitely need to step up to a comp next season

Looks good opportunity! Having just got back from a week in Cumbria I'd love to move North or West.

I’ll rephrase that. We have milled Sequoia, not that exact tree 😉😂
