  1. Internationals 784,785 something like that, cheap parts, lots of dealers still up and down country, easy to use. or any little tractor of similar ilk.

Always be honest with customers, weve found is the best policy and theyll thank you for it, (although some people weve dealt with arent honest back but heyho its a funny old world and dont give them another thought - lifes too short)

it is a competative market place at the moment with tree work and firewood selling - but if youve got a good product with a good service and a friendly face thats prepared to give advice to customers and a smile youll soon get your good name and reputation about.

Competition has never been a concern of ours as I always think competition is healthy it keeps you on your toes and offers the customer a choice!

pricing - difficult - try and find out what your nearest other sellers are selling logs for and price accordingly - never undercut, as i think if they are selling at that price, theyve worked it out that thats where there is a good margin in it. it may also dont rub people up the wrong way undercutting - make friends going up you might need them when your on your way down.

Weve been at this business 10 years and Id like to think we are fair and honest with eveyone and we have a pretty good name about ( I hope!)

as many people have posted - word of mouth is your best advert.

it may be that to get to where you want to be instead of offering cheap logs offer to deliver weekends or evenings with a 48hr delivery service as an incentive to get work without upsetting any rivals etc

    all the best

    Them log people in Staffs.

  2. weve often mulled this over, if your just doing logs, cant get better than a transit tipper or iveco - as you can reverse up difficult drives better than with a trailer, also have it sign written nice with your landline number on - this distinguishes you from the dodgy dealers

the ultimate weve often thought would be a hicap landrover with ally tiper body fitted - but we all have dreams dont we.

All in all if your just doing logs and not tree surgery (chipping etc) go for a tipper like everyone else says - if your doing 3 + drops a day you will soon get tired of hand balling the logs on and off - best to tip and collect your money.

L200s are OK but very uncomfortable if your a big guy, (like us ) tend to give you back ache if in allday - Landrovers brill can fix yourself, parts cheap, go off onto peoples lawns etc into wood

Before they went bust you couldnt get a better truck than a cheap and cheerful LDV go for miles on £20 of derv.

Mitsubuishi have to be serviced by Merc - so expensive

Isuzu and Nissan brill trucks, but expensive - and tight cabs., but go well.

Ultimate log truck - Unimog with tipper body and hiab! lets all build one!

all the best in your venture

youll never make a mint but have fun trying

  3. hi everyone - timber hauliers/merchants/foresters-

anybody got any nice larch for sale or can get hold of some with a price to Uttoxeter, Staffs - weve got plenty of scots pine at the moment that were felling for FC at moment but a client of ours likes Larch logs for firewood

ideal spec would be 10-14" diameter in 10-12ft lengths (anything over 6ft ideally) ideally 40tonne plus if at right price

    cheers joy

  6. I would not be so sure.

I know someone who thought their coal merchant was ripping them of. They called trading standards.

They came round, swept out the coal bunker, got a the customer to order some coal. After it was delivered the re-bagged and weighed the coal. Sure enough under weight.

    The coal merchant was prosecuted.

Yes, we have had a new customer with similar problems - wanted us to cut a longer length of wood than we normally do, so we did, processed it straight into back of tipper, delivered on our normal size tipper which we quote as holding approx 2 cubic metres (an ldv tipper 3.5 tonner), we had nt realised that the longer lengths had more spaces between and didnt sit well in the truck and when the customer then stacked it they complained that he was a prof. and measured 1.8 cubic metres or something to that ilk - wanted to keep the load - didnt want money back, but only wanted to pay for half of load due to "not as supplied quanitity and threatend us with trading standards"

needless to say, we wont be selling any more to them - but everybody, just be aware there are jobs worths out threre - and we are not in any habit of ripping people off - always offer full refund if not satisified - but some people I think cause trouble cause they enjoy it!

  7. only wanting to know about it, as when we get down our large stock of seasoned wood , you always come last end of spring start using up your last stocks, and theyve hung about with snow on and got very wet, and the poly tunnel is good, we do use it, brilliant for sticks, but thought we could power something withe the waste we get from making sticks, and the huge amount of sawdust we have - i know once it comes out the kiln it sucks up the moisture in the air etc, but thought we could attempt something with a storage container and a blower attached to a dragon burner or similiar and wanted to know if anyone has tried??
