  1. Here is my best effort. I know I should have dragged the splitter out first but I was concentrating on my art
  2. I used the billet method last year its good if you dont have concrete covered hard standing. But I found it hard going standing 1m lenghts of 400mm trunks. we have a vertical splitter. This year Iplan to just ring it with a large electric saw from stihl mse 220 and split straight into log pile saves double handling. When its time to go out scoop with bobcat.
  3. Bobcats arnt the most stable things with a loaded bucket in the air ( I have a pic somewhere of ares on its back, dont ask how) I have a hakki with a 12" capacity and am thinking the same especially with the cord getting bigger. I was going to trade up but you talked me out of retail especially the granny logs bit:lol:
  4. phone rang today down to last few logs and could not wait a day for delivery so I said I would try and get out this afternoon. He said he would ring round for a better price:confused1:
  5. I have a 753 bobcat good for me, alot bigger tho, only thing that lets them down is the damage they do to the ground. Mine weighs 2.4 tonnes so big kit to take to site. I would consider something that articulates and easier to get in and out of.
  6. Just my idea but I would save those nice tractors for proper work. Buy something 35-80hp for £2000 running a 1000 pto at 540. A cheap bobcat to load an old lorry body to feed the palax. Retailing wood the margin is small to wholesale must be tiny especially if you buy the wood in.
  7. We just cut 10-12" if they want bigger we can happily do it on the splitter. If they want 6" logs I charge 20% more because lots more work loads more saw dust.
  8. Spot on, if customer needs bone dry logs why dont they stock up in march. Because, they feel the log merchant should spend £15,000 on cord wood so they can keep their money in the bank and buy last minute. Its going to be very difficult to supply them in the future. I buy as much cord now that I can afford and want to take a risk on. If the market crashes or is over supplied or storms push the trees over in october you could get stuck with it.
  9. If its had the wrong plugs fitted make sure it has not caused damage to the piston.
  10. Same as when our customers want £1500 to trade in a 30 year old genset we add £1450 to the price of the new one. Not knocking it
  11. Once someone has butchered the cap in it will always be a pain. check for damage.
  12. I would say it needs to be free. I pay £39 a tonne but for that its delivered and stacked and roughly the right size for our processor. I dont go out and collect free wood because it would loose me money and be too time consuming.
  13. Lot to take in there will think about it. To go on with get coils checked or swap if possible. its easy to spark in free air much harder under compression. Check for air leak on manifold. You may have an air leak on the good cyl so the carb has been set rich to compensate. Check valve clearances and timeing .
  14. On older john deeres sometimes you can fit a different shaft for different speeds
  15. Several blokes on ebay. I saw 20 lucas keys for £8 a bargain if you are like me. I would get several in one go cheap on postage
  16. I run on the 1000 pto with adaptor for 540. With engine revs at 1100 gives me 540 rpm runs for weeks on a tank of fuel.
  17. went mad during the snow slowed last two weeks. I never advertised this year as we did not get the volume processed in the summer ( to busy else where ) Would like to go hard at it this summer but not sure if we have had two unusually good winters for firewood. Next winter could be mild and over supplied by people out of work ???
  18. They need an earth spike to ensure a good earth path Then shake the ladder:lol:
  19. I have never read a manual and not learnt at least one thing so always worth reading even when you are as clever as me:lol:
  20. Also dont shut the saw off after full load running. try to fill before it runs out of fuel. If you dont idle the saw down it stops at max temp with no way of cooling this can also shorten the life of you ignition packs etc.
  21. If anyone has some spaulted beech in Hampshire I will collect free so I can mill it into spaulted logs.
  22. I paid £600 for 17 tonnes it was all spaulted beech. A turner offered to take the lot and make me a bedside cabinet. Needless to say I hope the firewood is burning well.
  23. No but it sounds like a plan is that each ?
