  1. If you are leaving the army keep one foot in the door. Contacts are everything these days and its a bit chilly in civy street at the moment.
  2. I am having a go with these this year . Tried the billet method in the past far too much work.
  3. When you say butting does that mean its big timber. At £50 a tonne u should be able to get 9" stuff for processsor, stuff over 14 " is more work and should be a tad cheaper. But i could be wrong the firewood market has gone a bit mad. Lets just hope it does not melt down.
  4. Ebay is ok if you buy local and collect and pay cash. If the seller has misdescribed just walk away at least you are face to face. Agricultral sales always seem to be full of junk people are off loading. Free ads and cash convertors can be good. Cash converters even move slow items on ebay
  5. Cut it into logs now and leave in the sun. Come sept cut a log in half and use a moisture meter if below 20% ready to go beech seasons quickly. Dont sell by the tonne when seasoned sell by the loose cubic metre otherwise you will be giving away alot of timber and open to problems with trading standards.
  6. We have mse 220 stihl about £450 anything less I think would be a waste of time even for home use. Sounds more like a hedge trimmer than hells angels. I have noticed vibs are very high on leccy saws.
  7. Not sure they come from Sussex way will try and find file with drawings.
  8. This one I think is crap tyres or tyre pressures. All our trailers tow as good as gold at any speed steady as a rock unless badly loaded. If you have a feeling a vehicle is not like this then get it checked out dont just carry on at a lower speed. I have pulled ifor williams 16ft trailers around a race track empty at over a 100 miles an hour with out a twitch.
  9. No solar gain as cap is black out prevailing wind does not blow through but then neither does the rain. Logs dry like crazy.
  10. The way I have always worked is to have a second string to the bow. I charge at least £300 a day to service large diesel generators If someone drags a petrol honda down my drive it goes back up again as i cant earn a living from it. I enjoy my log business and dont need to sell those cheap either because i have done 3 days that week on the gensets. When you dont need work you can price it high and u will find u still get it. But if u desperately need it to survive its a bigger gamble. £100 a day seems low for the skills and danger you guys have even on paye let alone self employed. Remember you have no paid holiday or sick pay and I bet half of us have no pension plan. Good luck and stay safe.
  11. Hi dave £800 ish for 150 £4.20 inc del + vat rings a bell. Just waiting to see if the stuff goes mouldy and if they fall to bits in the sun. Bought from LC packaging look the dogs so far.

  12. I think its good you shared your thoughts and worked out you were tail heavy. i tow big gensets weighing up to 2.5 tonne and know that swaying feeling, makes your chest tighten and your but grip the seat. I have never endorsed the accelerate out idea allways foot of gas and let things calm down. we had a few moments years ago with the disco ones. never really had a problem with the amazons due to the extra weight and stability.
  13. I think it will be £90-£100 a cube depending how much free wood I get for hardwood.
  14. Finished 3 weeks ago but we were on rations from December anyway. Working hard now not to get caught short next winter.
  15. Does not matter what you deliver it will be too light or too heavy too big or too small. Too much or too little too early or too late. Too wet or too dry and always to expensive. Best save yourself alot of hassle and drop it off round my house i will get rid of it for u. Dont bother bringing the willow and can you pick the poplar and sweet chestnut out
  16. I think you would be hard pressed to hire a chainsaw and put fuel in it for £50 a day let alone get an operator
  17. My wife does the kindling and the splinters dont cause me a problem as long as I have my ear plugs in
  18. I have been told larch gives u terrible splinters that drive u mad but never tried it my self. The less bark you get in the bag the better the product looks slab wood will probably give you alot of bark.
  19. The plastic bags are cheap 1p as opposed to 13p for a nice net bag. I think coal men like plastic bags because kindling does not get wet when on lorry all day. You could try talking them round.
  20. Thanks for the feed back. What worries me is how light it is when dry. Does horse chestnut spit as well as sweet ?. Because it is dry and light I can get a good volume back on the trailer behind Landrover but it will look overloaded. I have the option to let a large amount of large horse butts go to a competitor and cherry pic the nicer stuff decisions I am thinking the chestnut could be alot of work especially with the transport I have.
  21. As title says really. Have been offered about 300 tonnes of very dry chestnut could be bought at a good price but need to get better transport 12 miles away. There is some other ash and beech and will be on going but need to work out how to get it back to yard effectively. Some is in 4ft butts but seller will ring up as required. Not really nice straight cord so not ideal for our timber trailer. More 14 tonne grain trailer but then will need something to load.
  22. I have had a large order for kindling this week and it came on email via the firewood network. Especially good as we are just going off season. Customer sounds very genuine so definately worthy of one of these:dancing2:
  23. Got to admire him for admitting his mistake and putting it up I bet that made the adrenaline flow
  24. I have a new pot and piston for the stihl disc cutter and I think its the same as the 051 . I had one about 2 years ago used it for firewood till it went bang. Think it may have been silicon in Tesco fuel that killed it. Did not feel that powerful and low revving heavy to lump around all day.
