  1. Hello, I'd be interested to know how you got on with the thinning/mulching, as I'm starting to take on this sort of work with an alpine tractor and forestry mulching flail. Knowing what to charge is as always the tricky bit.

  3. Hi Chris, Happy New Year! It's good processor size 8-12". The other difference between arb and forestry is that if (very unlikely obviously) the tree goes the wrong way, there aren't any greenhouses/cars etc to wreck.
  4. Hello everyone, I've been offered some standing timber. It's mostly Birch with a small amount of Ash and Hazle. Access is pretty good, but they want all the understorey clearing and brash in piles or wind rows. There's probably 40 ton ish, but that is quite a rough guess. What would you expect to pay/be paid?

  6. Gransfors gets my vote as well. Hand forged swedish craftsmanship, I've not come across any better. Sit down before you look at the prices though.
  7. How about a Valmet 6800. There's one at Davies Implements It's on for £13000 so a bit out of the £10000 budget and it still needs guarding, but it looks pretty good.
  8. Hi, taxation class is currently PLG and the body type is "light 4x4 utility". There's photos of it in the classifieds under vehicles for sale. I think i've changed my mind about selling it if i can convert it. thanks all

  10. I am considering converting my land rover 127 ambulance to a dropside flatbed. The question is, if i do, will i have to change taxatioin class and what are the issues if i do? thanks for your help guys. ben
  11. Hi Rovers90, i looked at the apf as well. The palax is certainly a bit heavier (about 100kg). I have been using a Hakki Pilke Hawk, which is a smaller machine, but similar to the 1x37. The things i find annoying with the hawk are, the outfeed conveyer getting jammed with crap under the belt, it looks as though this wouldn't happen with the palax 's chain conveyer. logs dropping into the splitting trough sideways on and jamming in the splitter. How much have you used the palax? What's good? what's not? thanks for your info Ben
  12. I sell by container volume. 3/4 cubic metre sacks of logs. The sack is definately 3/4 cubic metre and noone can argue.
  13. Hello all, I am considering these two machines and wondered if anyone has experience of them. I am looking at the joystick versions of both. I will be putting all sorts through it, not just straight clean birch and ash. Let me know what your thoughts are.

  16. Well Larry if you can find the ideal do it all vehicle you could probably retire now. Hilux = nice to drive, reliable, fairly economical (compared to a landy anyway). Also, more or less bullet proof and pretty good off road. But, it won't tow like a landy or hold anywhere near as much as a 130 or hicap 110. If you need a crewcab you will also lose most of the back. Landrover = Not so reliable (although mine has been great). The 300tdi isn't as thirsty as you would think with a few modifications and I have found it to be a great engine. It will tow almost anything. You're unlikely to get pulled by vosa on weight since your GTW is around 7t. As a day to day car... not good. Noisy, cold in winter, hot in summer. I haven't seen one yet that is water tight. On a long journey it's exhausting. I have a real soft spot for my 130 ambulance, but I'm changing to a 4x4 sprinter and flatbed truck, probably a transit or daily. Well that's my experience. If anyone has that magic all rounder let me know.
  17. hi T.L., I am in forestry rather than tree surgery too. How are you running machines without mot/tax. Do you mean tractors? I presume you use two towing vehicles to tow two trailers? Very interested to hear more.

  20. Thanks all, on top of the info you've all given me, I've also found some other useful stuff. This came from the government's business link website under Dual-purpose vehicles, showman's goods vehicles and other vehicles that don't need an operator's licence "Vehicles with permanent 'fixed equipment' such as a winch or generator." "Dual-purpose (road and off-road) vehicles. This includes all dual-purpose vehicles, such as Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Jeeps, 4x4s and their trailers - that are designed to go over rough ground as well as on roads, provided they do not weigh more than 2,040 kilograms when unladen." Sounds like these might well apply to alot of us.
  21. Can anyone tell me at what point I need an operators licence and tachograph? I am tying myself up in knots trying to understand the rules about 3.5t, 7.5t. Or 3.5t with 3.5t trailer on the back. Are there other regs to consider? Will I need 6 weekly servicing from a registered garage? Will I have to pay for an extortionately priced tax disc? aaaaahhhh! HELP! thanks

  23. Hello everyone, just thought i'd let you know about my stolen tractor on the off chance someone gets offered it. It's a red Antonio Carraro HTM8400 Supatrac. It has been fitted with a Farmi EV300 winch on the front and front tubular guarding and is artic steer. Along with tractor went a JMS1005 forestry trailer with JMS110 crane. Thanks Ben
  24. I've just started using them. I squeeze 6 on, which increases capacity from 2.6 to 4.5 cu.m on my trailer. i swing them on and off with a little 24v 500kg swing lift winch crane. The ones i've got have tipping loops on the bottom so you can still tip if you want to. Not sure how long they'll last, as they inevitably snag on stuff, but tears don't seem to get bigger.
