There’s usually a gypsy stick to be seen laying on top of the chip in the box of most tree firms trucks.

occasionally alongside a tarmac rake and extra long bolt croppers.

jokes aside a good gypsy wand as i know it as is a great tool! can save a crappy climb or stretch many a time.

Are you talking about hand or powered.

powered. I use the stihl battery one hta 135if i remember right so quite long.

We do put it in the rear onto the chip but staff arent as carful and the bar oftern gets put under pressure.

My last one actually ended up cracking the aluminium casting of the inner head, i assume from metal fatigue.

    Cheers

  3. Can i ask how you transport your pole saws?

Ours goes on the back but i alway see the bar getting bent slightly.

One of the guys wants to strap it to the ladder bars on the roof but i dont really like that idea for fear it may come loose and slide off.

Anyone come up with a alternative and a pic to show would be ideal.

    Cheers

  4. not got any further with this garage job (waiting to hear back from the crane operator i use).

The tree looks to be in good health ironically but when i went to the root ball it was like sponge! no wonder it came down, the roots were shot. This is a lot bigger in the flesh, a very mature birch it estimate 80+ yrs.

it was worked on, crown cleaned and given the thumbs up by another firm just 2 years prior (not myself).

ironically following on from other comments the 2 home owners (tree belongs to the house on the left out of the picture) want 2 prices as insurance will only cover up to the fence line even though the garage owner property doesnt own the tree.

its a easy job with a crane or a platform (to strip first) and then a timber grab on say a grab loader lorry but a must for something that can lift a heavy lump.

Before we start a job like this, alway get written /email conformation from insurance company that it is paying first !

Not what the customer tells you, then email to say that all care will be taken but any further damge we will not be liable for if we take responsible care.

Thats a good idea. do you just put them off until they produce said paperwork then? Everyone i encounter is desperate to get it done asap.

Just seen one today, chap says dont break the garage. Its walls are bowing! roof gone!

  6. Evening all.

To start i havent done any but the thought did occur to me as we were removing fallen trees. If as one of the jobs we had today the tree didnt cause any damage the house but in the removal process damage was caused what is the situation? Todays tree lay itself down on the corner of a roof, fair bit of weight but zero damage! We got it off with zero damage but i did wonder what would be the case if damage occurred?

We were able to rope it and lower it off a nearby tree but if that wasnt there god knows! a crane wasnt a option due to no access and a platform wouldnt work as it needed to be held up once cut from the roof and again no access.

Its a insurance job but would the insurance company turn around and say the damage needs to be claimed on my insurance?

here is the beauty, got too dark to get more pictures so will finish off in the morning.

    Cheers

  7. Oasis

always thought they were very monotone and strummed basic cords on a guitar.

poplar mainly cause they gave the finger to the rest of the music industry at the time (not that they were the first to do this).

The fact that they made a successful career and lots of money aside but then there are always useless people that somehow make a fortune.

Take a look at the vast "influencers " today. need i say any more?

  8. Or more likely you set it all up and they call at 6am with a bad belly! (nothing to do with the pub the night before honest gov!)

Then you are left in the position to let down the customer at the last minute or give up your day and then your family loses out.

Trust me weekend work relying on others sucks!

  9. I am at  the quoting stage and looking to see if anyone would be interested in subbing in who owns a small chipper, CS100 etc.

it would be for 3 days. In Sandhurst, Berks

Or if anyone knows a hire shop that hires small machines out that would also be option.

    Cheers

  10. i dont know for sure but with down time and the cost the dealers charge to investigate for a bit more i can have a new one.

they have gone up a bit now but back in the day a couple of new electronic parts were £120 or so, add labour in and your touching 200. new ones for the body (not batteries) were £350ish and your back to brand new, razor shape blades away you go.

If i was a home owner id still have one but i could see it lasting for ever (more or less) as its going to have much less use and probably treated better. lets face it employees are what they are.

A bonus for me is i got the lawnmower which runs on the same battery.

  11. only used the stihl ones. Brilliant bits of kit but for us dont last anything like what the petrol one did.

Most of mine die within a year or so. If i got 2 years id be impressed. since they came out ive gone through about 12 with a 4 man team, i watch over them so not abused. just seems the motors one day randomly pack up. The rest is fine, they have got better with refinements for sure ( especially the pole saw one).

The batteries on the other hand have yet to die. Got the original ones from when they first came out still going strong!

  12. no they dont ask how, just provide a quote. Obviously i need to do it right as a) im liable and b) its my reputation also on the line if i cock up or anything was to go wrong.

Tbh id rather lose out on cost than cowboy it.

I would think you are correct that they just look at the cost and go for the cheapest. normally what happens when things are dictated by costs.

All traffic management I have used never do site visit always street view it and take through what I need from them.

Surely spec for quote will state what traffic management is needed.

"Cut all tree branches back from obstructing streetlights along footpath in front of Pope’s"

This is all i got given. Not exactly very informative! it comes off a tree report thats been done and passed along various channels and when it gets to me its the basic tree work spec only.

    Its for a local authority.

My thoughts were either single lane closure or stop go boards.

Lane closures is always around £1000 here.

I havent read that link that was posted up, will do shortly.

    Thanks for all the replys!

  14. i will do, just wasnt entirely sure what direction to go! Admin lady looked into it a bit and seemed to think that if its short term ( ie 10 minutes at a time) that sometimes stop go signs are less disruptive and prefered.

So thought id ask the collective mind and experience on here!

    Cheers

  15. Not sure if this is the right section so if not please feel free to move accordingly

I need to quote for clearing around street lights, 8 in total along a pretty quiet road.

Now i am wondering if as its a pretty fast moving site ( going to take 10-15 tops , probably less) per light so i need to get the whole road length that i am working on sectioned off or can i use 2 guys with stop go boards, like when the drain clearance guys suck out the drains?

Thing is i am competing with other firms, so i dont want to go the whole big site route and they go with a couple of guys and end up been massively over on the cost if i am allowed to use a more simpler version. Like wise i want to be correct!

I can get in a traffic management company to advise but they want £150+ for a visit. Not a problem if i had the job but as only tendering at this stage i dont want to to be spending when i may not get the work!

the work starts about 30 m or so from traffic lights, goes down towards a gentle bend, in total about 150 m (measured on google maps) .  Always good visability for 2 guys with stop and go boards.

The road is st Marks road, Binfield, Berks. from the London road Junction upto and just past the first bend.

Ive alo uploaded a picture to help.

    Any advice welcome.

    Many thanks
