  1. Rupe check out the 'how much does a tree weigh' thread in General talk. Lot of grist for the mill there regarding your project. I am starting work on my arb-hovercraft this weekend!
  2. Old plug looked fine, grey if anything. Even he wouldn't have oiled the wrong end! I wouldn't know a damaged piston if I saw one! I know it's only a hobby saw, but 1 hours use! Maybe I'll get him an 88 next birthday. With a 12" bar...
  3. I always have a clamber inside before quoting if it's a biggish job. Been caught out like that before. Bet they were dusty chipping John!
  4. No he wasn't. A full chip box of wood on a Transit DOES only weigh 220KG. Officer.
  5. My father in law bought a 180 to use for cutting a small amount of firewood at his place in France. Last year he said the saw had stopped and wouldn't start again. Went down there last month and sure enough the saw will not start. It has had less than an hour's use! Filled it with new fuel mix, bought new plug (sparking well when tested) but will not fire at all. Thing is, he hasn't got a clue about correct fuel mix, and could have been running it on 25-1 for all I know. Or diesel! He reckons it was cutting fine, stopped and that was it. Has he clogged the carb or done some terminal damage? The saw is still in France (we flew). My skills don't extend further than basic field-stripping of saws - pistons and carbs etc. are are bit beyond me. Any ideas welcome. Thanks.
  6. What's the difference between trousers and boots then? No SA remarks about legs and feet please.
  7. Can someone explain what the situation is about paying VAT on PPE? Boot s no, trousers yes, complete helmet set no, visor on it's own yes, gloves sometimes... What is the law? How does it work? How can I avoid it?!!!!!
  8. Thanks Dave. My education continues!
  9. Great news, remember the original thread. Excuse my ignorance, but what is tree pulling? Is it as self explanatory as it sounds? If so, with what?
  10. Is there some kind of laser hypsometer(?) device that can help in measuring tree volumes?
  11. Off the top of my head Ben I would say similar figure here.
  12. Ben - sssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
  13. No chipper? Do you carry some goats round with you?

Is the Bourne trilolgy any good Jamie?
  15. Great comment Marc!
  16. Has anyone on this thread wildly exaggerated a day rate to bamboozle any competition who may be reading?.....
  17. Can you be struck by forked lightning and live? Without being messed up?
  18. I mean why not just fell it rather than do that? It looked to be in the middle of nowhere. Confusing. Maybe he was entering a 'biggest top' competition.
  19. It's a good job it's on Sky (which I refuse to have), or I would be taking too many 'office' days! Come on lads!
  20. I'm not sure about the technique, but I am interested to learn what he was trying to achieve?
  21. That was a big wound to leave on a Beech. They don't like it up 'em IMO.
  22. Used to do a lot of telecomms work with MEWPs. One peal of thunder and the operators used to drop them smartish and wouldn't go back up for 2 hours after last rumble. Maybe because I wore a pointy copper hard hat.
  23. Subbing today repollarding a fairly big pop. Ground was a bit full (nightmare drop zone and drag), so I came down at a suitable point for a brew and a tidy up. About 5 mins later a real squall blew up. Within 10 minutes there was lightning flashing everywhere with thunder right on top of it. Started lashing down to cap it off. Early finish - good. Leaving my climbing and lowering systems overnight - not so good. Back tomorrow. How dangerous is it up a tree in these conditions with all the bling we carry, and has anyone got any good lightning tales? I am fascinated by the stuff.
