I've experimented recently as my wife's company embraces social media more and more. This is a French arb company finding out they've won a big job they priced against Mick. IMG_7059.MOV
  2. Totally Mick, I'm scaling down, not up, but I do enjoy teaming up with the lads who are on the rise. Works for me, works for them.
  3. Also Ben (great poll btw), either the lucrative SE isn't that different, or I need to jack my prices up! For the record I ticked the 'view only option'. I liked the way you levelled the playing field by setting a few criteria that most can relate to. I'm finding more and more that my best days financially are multiple small jobs, rather than big glory camera-tastic gruellers. I try and get a sense of each job from the initial phone call, where I always stipulate that the truck and chipper won't be appearing for less than £130, even for a tiddler. That sharp gets rid of loads of low ballers and 20 quote messers. 4/5/6 of them in a day and the cash, sorry, bank transfers, is/are where I want it to be.
  4. That is a very valid point Huck. 170 days at £500 and that's your lot. Leaves 194 days to blow it on hos and charlie, and spend Christmas Day with the family. The dirty c-word that Mick mentioned is obviously alive and well....
  5. That will make the poll more realistic Dan. We all cock up the price now and then!
  6. Just out of interest, how much is a bag of weed?
  7. I was a coiler for years, I'm now a big bag convert. I like the Sherrill bucket bags.
  8. That's definitely true on some jobs Huck, but money is money. Setting a line to crown raise half a dozen trees to 15' probably wouldn't impress most customers either. As I said earlier it's totally job dependent. If I need them and can finish quicker they'll get loaded.
  9. It's pretty well sorted in our village. If you have a pumpkin outside your door the kids knock, if you haven't they don't. I'll be at home smashing down a few cans while the wife is doing the rounds with the kids.
  10. Wise Mick. I don't really belong there anyway as I can't take down any tree (up to 200') in a morning. I have ventured my opinion occasionally, but fielding death threats from gypsies and Americans was distracting me from enjoying my wine.
  11. Even in the tree? That's going to get real expensive.
  12. Don't take this the wrong way Vesp, but you've just mentioned several scenarios that get ladder use such a bad reputation.
  13. I'll use them for all the things Steve mentioned. They are definitely a useful tool for me. Not to be confused with the Darwinist scenarios that Matty mentions, some of which are both horrifying and predictable.
  14. Ladders, SRT, DDRT, RWZZ, ACDC, ICBM. Whatever gets me to the boozer quickest is getting used! Bang an SRT line into a takedown, hang your ropebag off the line for a bit of weight and you can literally run up the stem on spikes just holding the stem with your hands as your hitch advances, no flipline required. Works best with fit girls watching.
  15. I've quoted, been accepted, done the job, made good money then the happy customer has told me they've had other quotes that have been twice mine, and I don't think we're particularly cheap. Maybe the other quotes are cockups, the companies are shite and take too long, or maybe they quote everything really high and just make a great living from the jobs they do get. Which is quite a smart business model if you can make it work!
  16. You wouldn't sink the competition either. There are plenty of customers out there prepared to pay pro prices for pro work. Not everyone gets 12 quotes for a £200 job.
  17. Absolutely. The cheapest price may well come from the most efficient and knowledgeable company. But it usually doesn't....
  18. I can see both sides to this, but I think more and more that people getting in door knockers or the cheapest quote wins brigade get what they deserve. I feel sorry for the trees, like.
  19. That's not exactly perfect Steve, but you're miles away from Huck's Pot Noodle guy!
  20. Same as Joe. All the bits I took off are definitely dead now, anyway.
