  2. Yeah, just looked at some absolute carnage on the Helford passage where 120 trees came down over the weekend. 2 weeks of work clearing 12 large Cupressus macrocarpas and thats just one property. Shame to see root plates sticking up like that but also can't wait to start on those dodgy hung up ones:scared1:. Post some pics next week, if I have time!

  3. That looks wicked, would love to have a go on that one.

Making you own requires a nice long bit of wire rope 16mm is good and cranking it up with a winch to something strong. We made one on my mates farm using his unimog's winch, you had to swing you legs up half way down to clear a hedge, it was great fun.

  4. I've been told that my insurance may not stand up if my chainsaw ticket isn't refreshed i.e. upto date. The last one was 98 actually the day I passed, so I know that HSE advise 5 years for regular users and 3 years for occasional users, and apparently 5 years is only for professional tree fellers in forestry? I'm not really sure about this.

Anyway the insurance company have copies of my certs and gave me the insurance, this is a bit confusing as surely that would suggest everything is fine. But trusting insurance companies is hard to do.

I think I will take the refresher asap.

    What do you reckon?

  5. Just looked at a mature S.Chestnut with a ring of sulphur tuft fruiting bodies around it (no pics i'm afraid) they were emerging from the roots and collar. As this is a saprotrophic fungi and not parasitic I'm wondering if it is a secondary infection on roots that are mush or if there is nothing to worry about. The tree is on its own, the crown seems ok with only minor deadwood, there are some targets i.e. hotel, staff, tourists etc

Any info would be good as I've not really come across this one before.

  6. Make a nice bar that oak! Drop of ale mmmm!

Wouldn't be the first old timer without ppe on though. One of the guys I work with who's 57 needs to be reminded constantly to put his helmet on, then I just get 'Oh p**s off' in reply 'I'm not deaf yet' lol.

  7. I have the AuS poles still, to remind me what real work is, I have a telescopic Bahco, which is utter rubbish, and the one i rate the best (value for money/works well) is the Wolftools polesaw and adjustable lopper attachment. The beauty of Wolf tools is that if you need any bits you can call into any garden centre in the UK and you're back in action.

Yes agreed i use the wolf garten 4m which is ok for most things, not as robust as some, but the lopper head is really good. A snip at 50 quid (the local garden centre sale)
