  1. I think one way the recession can affect smaller businesses like ours is bad debt, I managed to collect a cheque today off a client who has owed me for over three months, it was about 5K. I had to virtually stand over him while he wrote it in the end. 5K may not be be enough to break the bank but perhaps if it was 10K and then the chipper breaks down and you loose a few days and struggle to find the cash for a repair, suddenly even with a full order book you could be in trouble. I'm certainly a lot happier now I've got it... I just hope it clears:scared1:
  2. Well dome for posting that mate, I reckon the extre time you take putting a few extra cuts in here and there will be more than make up for the time you spend after with a hammer and nails. Even when chunking vertical sections a step cut will give you so much more control otherwise one day a chunk will take your saw with it. But please never post any more felling tops out like that, my nerves could'nt take it.
  3. I have never met Chris White but I'm sure he's no worse than anyone else. don't wory about it, I'll bet its easier than you think.
  4. I've tried one with a short bar( i think 28"), it was pretty good, maybe its the extra weight thats balancing the saw better and pulling the nose through so you're less aware of pushing it?
  5. Just wondered, you should get some good training on the course. If you can already climb and are confident with the saw then you should be fine. The clasroom work is fairly streight forward, the usual h+s stuff as well as bend radii and S.W.L, M.B.S and LOLER stuff. Start revising that if you think you need to.
  6. I,ve done that on a big horse chestnut before, but with oak you could probably get away with an ntp cut as the exposed heartwood is so resistant to decay. I have seen some very big wounds on oak that have completely healed, but with Aesculus or lime or something soft you might be right.

    lost

You mean some poor bugger with a very sore head.
  8. i've haerd that the samson is good, I'm not a fan of HiVee though, we have some of that, it sems to snag easily and looks rougher than the xtc despite being three years younger.
  9. Its used pretty regularly, the xtc we have now has been incredibly hard wearing, I'm hoping for a similar performance from whatever we get next. Does anyone know whether the xtc blaze is the same construction as the old xtc that we have at the mo?

So it does, which makes Kretzschmaria the more likely., never seen it up high before, how high is that?
  11. TBH Peter, the xtc its replacing was bouncy and heavy and I much prefer my Tachyon to that, however this rope is'nt for me its for Andy who works for me and he prefers the xtc to thinner lines like the tachyon. So all that interests me as I will have to buy both it and its eventual replacement is, does it wear well?

On ash it could be Daldinia concentrica, its hard to tell from the pic bit if you get up close Kretzschmaria (Ustulina) deusta will be crispy like tarry soot where as if you cut open Daldinia there are concentric rings visible. http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~5680~source~gallerychooserresult.asp BTW Kretzshmaria is usually found near ground level.
  13. Anyone use it? Due to some of my kit being over 5 years old it is now requiring replacement:mad1: It seems a waste to chuck a perfectly good harness and two ropes, anyway my local dealer has an offer on gecko and i wonder what its like. The ropes will be used by my employee and he prefers a fatter rope, the two retireing ropes are xtc and have been excellent so if its similar to that it'll do. As for the harness he quite likes the skylotec kholibri, any thoughts on that? Any comments much appreciated.
  14. what a load of shite, Fuel will actually go up for anyone who is vat registered. and so will national insurance in a wee while. and he's got the nerve to say its all for small businesses????? in what way? what an arse

    Portable winch

Did you salvage that from the Ark Dean?

    Portable winch

can you send a man up a tree with it? It'd save a lot of footlocking. Otherwise seems no better than a tirfor.
  17. Ouch. I take it you cant streighten it? I used to drive an old 12 wheel 30ton tipper on a grain plant, I used to fill up with the loadall and drive a couple of hundred yards to a different shed reverse in and tip, day in day out for weeks. When tipping the stour used to go everywhere and it was dark in the shed so I used to time the tipper coming down and then set off after 20 seconds or so. One morning the truck had developed some sort of problem and the tipper was slow coming down... same thing only on a bigger scale.
  18. It had a tank on the front which would have weighed a ton or so when full. They are used for all sorts of things on the continent, it has a full 3pl at the back and can do pretty much anything a regular tractor would do. My Dad is selling this one at the mo, it'll probably go back to the continent, they're not very common over here. If it was set up the other way round with the cab at the front it would make a great timber crane platform, it has good ground clearence, as it is though I'm not sure what use it would be.
  19. The Zylon has a space behind the cab like a fasttrack, this is just like a normal tractor at the back. I'm not sure what its called though.
  20. Merc pickup for sale, excellent condition, one careful owner. Saw this ther other day the chassis had actually snapped in half, still parked on the road though.
  21. What about one of these? the engines under the cab an case you were wondering, does 50K on the road.
  22. Appart from the blades and their mounting bolts and possibly the bearings theres not much else to break. I saw a hammer go through a bandit 90 once that did some dammage, sounds like you were lucky.
  23. Whats the height / reach on your crane M8? Looks very handy, I recon better than a timber crane type for tree surgery.
  24. I can honestly say I'm not struggling, yet. I keep thinking its going to go quiet and then a few more jobs come in. I know the phone is quieter than in previous years but having been around a few years and by networking i get jobs just through knowing someone who knows someone. I wish everyone the best of luck and will not be hoping for anyone else to go under, I dont see how that helps TBH. We're all better off working properly as businesses with insurence etc. than claiming dole and doing "homers" on the side undercutting the guys who are still making a go of it.
