  1. Ever lifted a cardboardbox that has been lying on a lawn? The soil is really porous and full of various insects, worms, centipedes, wood-louse etc... I'm not too worried about air as there is no cardboard close to the trunk and the mulched area doesen't extend all the way to the dripline. In a year or two I will come back and do the rest of the tree all the way to the dripline and hopefully add oakchip instead.
  2. Quite correct sloth... The main reason for my little project is to remedy (hopefully) the compaction caused by pedestrians. The mulch consists of semidry lime branches in full leaf. I want to add as much food for the worms without providing too much "green"material. (Basically, some trial and error...) Last year I spotted some massive Pholiotas around the base and I want to provide better growing conditions for the tree. Later I will add a low fence so the oakleaf can stay on site and smother future weed and provide the fungalweb with the right food. I have done several trees before but only small ones that are sort of newly planted (4-5 years) and this treatment has been very beneficial for soilstructure. Worms were plenty and the trees put on some substantial growth after 2 years.
  3. I should post pictures of th other oak I did last year... It looks really good! The best place to keep pictures and stories are probably here!
  4. Thanks David! How is your patch coming along? Have you recorded the number of species you have found under that mulched oak (and under the fruit tree, pear was it?)?
  5. Bit of cardboard and mulch... Might expand to dripline next year if time permits.... pedestrians need time to adapt!
  6. Ive been thinking about improving conditions for this poor fella for 5 years... today everything came together! Flamed the area yesterday and carefully detected where the roots were and then rotovated the whole area where it was safe to do so. I've pruned limetrees all week so source for chip/mulch was close and saved me a good few trips to our yard. CS 100 got stuck in! The tree was moved some 20-25 years ago to make room for an extension of the railway station and it hasn't really put on any growth since... well se if that can be changed. loads of pedestrians as it is the shortcut between University and the mall... So diversion of pedestrians and worms for soil improvements, it would be nice to see some fungal activity...
  7. European Champion Lunge! Johan Gustafsson does it in style!!!!
  8. It has reached Gävle in Sweden, travelling north along the E4....
  9. Nothing is better than the Psycadelic Turk!
  10. Thank you everyone for two great days at the eye opening conference "Ancient Trees in Urban Environments", best conference by far i have visited! I will cherish these days and remember great talks and meetings with great people; Lynne Boddy, Frank Rinn, Chris Knapman, Mike Ellison, Mats Jonsell, Vikki Bengtsson to mention a few... I will never forget when Frank started to throw bananas, carrots and celery to the audience in order to explain the biodynamics of trees... and the salami and hotdog to show what different water content does to a plants structure! Thank you Jill Butler and Ted Green for your opening words! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H4Ax_T3qYQ]The Importance of Ancient Urban Trees - YouTube[/ame] Wonderfull to hear all different aspects and opinions on various subjects, and also realising that there is not ONE truth. Various opinions and ideas was expressed, shared and discussed. I´ll think about this and I´m looking forward to the next conference/workshops with more great speakers. Looking forward to field studies and practitioners! (QTRA and VTA with Mike Ellison coming up! Gothenburg here I come... )
  11. Welcome to a conference in Stockholm and its beautifull oak trees! May 10-11 2012 Thee fee has been kept low thanks to a lot of voluntary work and the greatly appreciated aid from the speakers SEK 2200 TWO DAYS, meals tea and snacks, sandwiches included... (around 200 Pounds)
  12. Yes he is from the UK, working for a Stockholm based arborist company He has been with the company since 2010 I'm afraid the name might be misspelled. I have received information from different people, but as far as I understand he originates from Norfolk. I understand that he was a popular young climber, that will be missed by many. John Brannon, Crew leader at at the company, said that Darryl felt like a son, and he was a superb member of the Crew. Always positive and a hard working climber, who always enjoyed a good laugh.
  13. Yesterday 30th of March 2012, a young tree climber, Darryl Platton 21 years, was killed in a car crash whilst driving to the work site. On behalf of the Swedish Arbcommunity I would like to express our deepest sympathies and thoughts with his family, friends and work colleagues and anyone else affected by this sad loss. As Arborists we know that every day is a risk, but sometimes there is no explanation for a death and they come completely out of no where. This has really affected everyone involved in our trade as, luckily, accidents is a very rare occurrence in the Arbworld in Sweden. The Swedish Arborist Federation SAF have decided to be naming the upcoming Rigging event trophy in memory of Darryl, and will have a minutes silence in memory of his life prior to the event. Our thoughts are with you.
  14. I completely smashed up my Ms360 a few weeks back... Broke the saw in two, back handle in bits. Not happy! £150 it costed to repair... Customer happy that I went home for spare saw and finished of the job the same day asked me to do a few extra things and add on bill and gave me a tip at the end of the day. Almost made up for my loss! Swings and carousels I suppose :-)
  15. Any thoughts on Polyporus on Ash? Fast and extensive or slow and mainly heartwood?
  16. As far as I understand these questions is that the lecturer wishes to establish the level of understanding of the trade within the class to start/teach at the right level. He/she asks about YOUR understanding... To give to much of an expert answer might be counterproductive. But as others already said; Safety precautions, workplan, fuelling station, emergencyplan, positioning of vehicle, backup plan.... Lots to be said but keep it simple and open for discussion as this seem to be on a basic level. First year? Whats your thoughts on the subject? Tell us and you'll get feedback instead!
