  1. Congrats JPbeaver - really nice photo. Hope you enjoy the troosers!
  2. Harsh! You better hope she doesn't start checking your posts!
  3. Yep - I have tried this and it works a treat. The way I was shown is to tie a marlin spike hitch in the working end of the rope and then clip the VT and pulley in to that with a spare biner, thereby extending it all away from your body so you can pull hand over hand behind the hitch and up you go!
  4. "as rare as rocking horse ****" and "tastes like Ghandi's flip-flops" are two of my favourites.
  5. The NJUG publication on trees and services is pretty good - here is a link to here you can download it. It seems there are no definitive restrictions on how close to services trees can be planted as their root spread is not predictable and damage to services not certain. However it obviously suggests that trees be planted in separate areas if possible. As long as the services are deeper than 600m the tree roots should not affect them too much - the only problem is if repair works need to be carried out. There are guidelines for the service contractors to follow for this such as not trenching if possible but in reality I don't think many follow this. http://www.njug.demon.co.uk/pdf/NJUG%20Publication10.pdf
  6. Hi Martin - any luck finding work yet? I know that Midland Forestry Ltd are taking on guys as they have just won a 7 year contract in Bristol - but I expect they want employees rather than subbies. Treeworks are a great company that use subbies as well.
  7. Cheers Steve - found the idler and adjusted but it has made no difference! Carl advises that there may be a blocked jet so we are gonna take the carb out and have a look. Thanks for your help!
  8. Good posts Marc - I agree. I hate it when the work area is just bombarded quicker than it can be cleared - usually either because there aren't enough groundies on site or the climber has no consideration for the groundies. I often work with High Scale who I must say is a great climber - he works at the pace of the ground staff and does everything very methodically - haven't seen him look like he is rushing around a tree ever but the job always gets done fast! It makes working with other climbers who are less considerate to their groundies very frustrating! p.s. there you go Carl, I said it - you owe me a beer.
  9. Hi Alex. Do your hands ever cross when turning the steering wheel? I hope not - it is exceedingly dangerous and likely to kill you and lots of other people.
  10. Wow, I always thought that tree-feeding was an overpriced myth but obviously not. Great to experience such quick results.
  11. He just thought it would look cool.
  12. Have been doing a slightly odd job crown lifting poplars the last 3 days. In my opinion they look a little odd but hey, the guy paid well and we used a cool MEWP for a lot of it.
  13. I have just spent three days crown lifting 100 poplars in the wind and I am bloody glad it's over. I've not been climbing that long and am sure that you guys would have breezed it, but I feel like I've been running on adrenalin for 3 days and I'm knackered!! More to the point, I think it you made a good decision Matty. Thanks for posting it here and making the rest of us feel better about the odd nerves now and again!!
  14. Don't Know Much About Quads But Wondered Why You Write Every Word With A Capital Letter At The Front!
  15. I just bought a used leaf blower (Stihl BG55) from ebay - it arrived yesterday. It works fine on full throttle but cuts out when idling. I assume this is a tuning problem - could anyone describe what I need to do to correct this? Ta!
  16. Today Danners (arbtalk name 'the wolf') took delivery of his shiny new chipper - all very exciting! It performed very well on its debut, despite leaking a little hydraulic oil because one of the nuts that connects the hose was a little loose. The only problem we found was that it sprays woodchip so much more vigorously than the old 150 - resulting in alot of chip bouncing out the back of the truck when it is more than half loaded! Other than that, I thought that this was a sweet chipper. (Note high scale doing some kind of new chipper dance in the background of first pic!)
  17. Here's how they do it at Kew - took this last weekend.
  18. Ah, I see. Not sure I could justify the different price tags for a little bit smoother though!
