Sorbus failure (due to what I'd imagine is Inonotus hispidus)

 

Then last shot, 49 days later - Bjerkandera adusta, fruiting on the exposed decayed wood.

May I ask why you expect hispidus? I came across a sorbus failure earlier this year with what looks like very similar decay. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=47770 the brackets shown appeared so soon after failure I expect they are the primary cause of decay, rather than secondarily utilizing dead/decayed wood; like your adusta (I think) are.

Didn't say I 'expect' I said I'd 'imagine'

Huge difference :biggrin:

 

MO seems to fit.

The heart of the tree (at height) being affected by what appears to be white (simultaneus) rot.

 

I've noted hispidus on Sorbus here a few times (although not noted fruiting on the above failed tree)

 

Not very scientific I know, but its what I've got to go on :biggrin:
