Range Rover 4.6HSE

I have the chance to get a 4.6HSE with a land rover body on it, tipper and winch. Heavy duty coil springs also. No cash to change hands, just an exchange for services rendered. I've read the horror stories of heater coils going and sleeve liners etc but does anyone have first hand experience with one? This will only be for hauling my stump grinder and a bit of firewood around so not my main vehicle but more of a toy.

Ive been looking at a range rover as they are a powerful and cheap 4wd compared to any of the japanese offerings. My research has generally concluded that they are not overly unreliable if you do regular servicing. Dont know what electronics this will still have but there can be issues there so it might be advisable to by a diagnostics tool so if anything electrical goes wrong you know where to start.

Got any pictures, it sounds interesting!?

I'll get some photos up as soon as I can. Getting my local mechanic to have a look over but safe to say that electrics are nowhere in sight. The interior is old Skool Land Rover so no gadgets or gizmos of any kind. Even comes with obligatory gaps around the doors. Only the chassis, lump and box are from the RR.

Sounds proper tastey that!

A local business owner ran a 4.6HSE, whiche he bought brand new, which I commented upon, he claimed for all the difference in running costs, (which his business could obviously afford) it was worth it for the effortless performance.

Enjoy your toy.

have a p38 4.0 se a very good capable truck, expect £40 every day on petrol and its good to allow the same again for repairs

I agree. A great 4x4 when the air suspension or fancy electronics are not playing up. For towing anything bigger than a box trailer you need 4.0 upwards as they are so heavy, but christ they are thirsty.

i had a 4.6 hse engine in my kit car it ran throttle bodies and programmable efi chucked out 330hp when i was finished with it loved petrol as well there were problems with the castings on the block they suffered from core slip when they were getting cast and you ended up with an offset hole that when it was machined it was thin on one side and cracked then the liner slipped and it gave the same symptoms as a head gasket this coupled with land rovers crappy hoses caused the demise of many engines the giveaway is usually a misfire on start up as the spark plugs get wet from coolant leakage into the bore apart from that they were pretty reliable from memory a lot were changed under warranty
