No, I most definitely would not say that, please refrain from misquoting me,deviating from the subject  or twisting my words in your usual manner.

and in reference to your edited glowing evaluation of pensioners, I hardly think you're qualified to speak for the entire population, even though you think you are.

There is no misquoting or deviants, a mere question as to why everything has to add up to a balance sheet.

The examples given are an extension of this idea, if you have no use to society then why should we spend money? A sick pensioner, what do they contribute to UK PLC financially? Not a lot, take, take take, so why should we pay out? Get nothing in return.

If you cannot understand concepts in written words that is not my failing.

For what it's worth I agree in part with both Steven P and Oldfeller. My comment about chucking them all on an island and letting them slaughter each other (murderers, no SP and OF...) was sarcasm. I don't approve of the death penalty. Partly for the reasons Steven P gives: it's an easy let-off. The shortest sentence. Better that they spend the rest of their days having to confront the enormity of their crimes and experiencing some of the anquish they've caused to others. Look how many lifers choose to take their own lives (or attempt to - Huntley was on suicide watch) rather than serve out their sentence. For those offenders execution would be doing them a favour.

But more importantly I fear giving the state the power to execute citizens. Double child murderers today, but who tomorrow? Those who criticise the government? We've already seen prisoners receive excessive sentences for poltical reasons just for venting on the internet. We just don't have a political class who can be trusted with the death penalty.

At the same time, lifers are indeed very expensive on the tax payer. Unlike pensioners, to use that example, they've contributed nothing to society, taken everything, and still we have to pander to their needs.

On the face of it Huntley's fate may seem the best outcome. But by killing him, Huntley's attacker becomes a quadruple murderer and we still have to feed him. And keeping people like this locked up puts prison officers in continual danger. Officers have reportedly said that Huntley wasn't killed as justice for his crimes. He was killed because his killer (like many others in HMP Frankland) like killing people, for both the pleasure of it and the notoriety inside. And now we have to pay to keep that monster alive.

There are no easy answers.

You might say, any over 65 year old with cancer, feck em, society won't ever recoup the costs. Same with grandad having a heart attack, why bother, costs are too much.

Money isn't everything.

-edit-

In fact, why bother with any healthcare for the retired if all you want is the most from your ££, retired only take take take with the pension.

You don’t think this is the long term aim of the laughably mis-titled ‘assisted dying bill’?

I've ever been in the situation to know with assisted dying - though the one who is suffering and chooses it I believe has to prove they do so with a clear mind. I was meaning stopping someone's treatment being another persons decision (in my example, a political decision based on UK PLC balance sheet / profit from the cash spent if all you ever care about is the money) - slight difference I guess.

I can see he didn't agree with me but it looks like his thoughts are the cost and only the cost. If that is how we make political decisions, where is the limit? Is it just those in prison (with a politically decided point where execution occurs), is it withholding treatment if you only have a short time left, or my extreme example (to make a point, got to go extreme), a cut off point with age. Or should we run the country looking at other aspects other than the financial bottom line? I think that is what we should do.

Disagree - the financial bottom line should be the hard foundation for any political decision - Labour are a case in point. Do gooders quite happy to spend other people's money on benefits. Even though the country is drowning in debt it's ok to lift the two child benefit cap, ok to fund all kinds of people to be on sickness and disablitly benefits. There's always stories of people claiming disabilty being caught out going on holidays or even doing running events.

The country is more or less bankrupt. Tax receipts just about keeping up with the interest on the debt
