Oaks, hawthorns, chestnut, sycamore, field maple, some ash, some poplar, some cherry / prunus. Bit of everything, really.

I was going to say oak after a bottle of red but after reading these perhaps I'll stick to reading responses about "bearings on an xyz chipper" or "what's the best chainsaw to use whilst wearing an adult nappy?' or "don't sit on the chipper infeed whilst drinking coffee and the machine is turned off... " Jesus it's getting bloody dry on here.

I couldnt have put it better myself, though the late Oliver Rackham did. In his book about the ash tree, he says he monitored this for fifty years and the oak came out first forty-eight times. On the other two, they came out together.

 

All these country sayings seem to be somewhat suspect; I can even recall several occasions where the 'red sky at night...' ditty failed to deliver.
