Interestingly, or not, laurel leaves were steeped in water to produce a cheap almond essence substitute. At least one death is recorded where it was drunk in concentrate instead of as a cordial, IIRC within a few hours.

 

I did some research as a neighbour was complaining that their neighbours laurel hedge was a threat to the fish in the pond. I suspect that our cats were actually more of a threat - but that's another story entirely.

 

Yes, it smells like Battenberg cake.
