Can someone tell me why there are so many toolboxes made of aluminium tread plate?

Look....it's just my opinion but I think it looks a bit tacky...and wasn't it designed to be walked upon for gripping, hence "tread plate"

Or am I missing something?

It's called chequer or checker plate round here and most places I've ever bought it call it that. It doesn't mark up as quickly or a much as flat plate and if it does mark it doesn't show up as much. If you don't like the pattern ask them to build it inside out ;) I've used it to make bash plates and various other items for vehicles.
