If you are cutting a metre off the top you will end up with a dead top, which will green over again in not too long a time.

Unless it is less than 2 metres tall now it won't do any harm, have cut 20 metres off many times leaving only 2 metres or less and they grow back. It's surprising how hard you can be and not kill them. Cutting the side face too hard is a different matter.

 

Just take a line and cut it to a level all the way along.

Lawsons branches tend to lay flatter whereas leylandii the foliage grows off at different angles from the branch/twig, thuja's kind of a bigger flatter needle/leaf
