It actually failed in that a pinhole leak appeared later, but he reground and welded a snotter on it, dry as a bone now.

Is hydraulic oil a real high risk?

Well according to my welder it’s the build up of heated gases that make it dangerous.

 

A little bit of research on t’internet showed he had a point, it wasn’t worth the risk and cost nothing extra as he just put a ‘t’ on his argon tank.

Thanks Mick. We had a vented tank/cap off and only a little bit of welding to do. So presumably not too much in the way of heat build up. TBH, neither the mechanic or I even considered that risk.
