Storing logs in piles

Just wondering if anyone does or has processed all there stock a year in advance then store in a shed just in a big loose pile? This is what I'm thinking of doing as I have a large barn which I use for firewood that's dry and properly vented but am worried the logs in the middle will go mouldy. The wood going in would have been felled 12 months and be a mix of ash, beech and silver birch. I currently only do about 100 tones a year so it would all fit in the shed if pushed up.

I do mine sort of like that. I am splitting next years now. I have a floor of pallets and line the walls with pallets to allow a little more airflow. When the pile gets about 3 feet deep, I lay more pallets on top and then repeat throwing the split logs on.

It's not as ideal as vented nets or pallet boxes, or even stacked billets, but it seems to work ok for me.

Only time I've had trouble with putting it in big piles is when it goes in rain wet this leads to that white mould.

as other have said invest in some pallets underneath the pile - huge increase in airflow for marginal cost and id be surprised if you had any problems
