Check your policy unless there is an exception for someone picking the locks, you should write to your insurance company stating that you locked the van and provide a copy/link to the above. If you make your case in a polite and reasonable way I'm sure they will pay out.

Had an Escort van in the past, both front doors, rear door and ignition had different keys due to being replaced at different times. Also had a Fiesta at the same time, the Fiesta key would open and operate everything on the van.

Some of the early Renault remotes could lock+unlock Fords; and Vauxhalls could unlock a Xantia and Fords. It was as if there were only a couple of companies making the gubbins and vehicle manufacturers having a job-lot.

 

Mind, in the case of the Xantia, all you had to do was wait long enough. They had a habit of unlocking themselves, especially if parked on a slope. They also had a habit of unwinding their windows, if the car was locked, while the ignition was switched off.

 

As for Transits, they've never been hard to get into. I sometimes think, Ford should supply padlocks & a hasp lock for every door, when still on the dealers' forecourt.

my mate had his transit nicked from outside his house. police told him the thieves use a bump key to open the door and release the steering then a speclift truck backs up and hooks on. gone in 2 mins (or less). the police said they had knowledge of a gang operating in the Yorkshire area !!

Alarm seems the only answer.

Look on commercial vehicle security websites, many have specific pages for each manufacturer of vehicles on what you have to do to overcome the gaps in security that each vehicle is produced with. We looked at buying a new ford transit but thought it stupid to then have to spend £400-£600 to make it secure. for example:

That's quite a useful website. Just fitted a padlock type lock to mine bit nerve wracking drilling 6 holes in the side of your van!

Just had a look at their website/vids. And I notice they've taken out part of the easy Ford theft equation. Their company vehicles aren't Transits.
