Agree with you on the Poplar.

I burn in a wood burner as well, but mines a 1930's Jotul and doesn't really seal that well, so you always get a bit of a wiff of whats burning. Don't half chuck out some heat though and stays in overnight, purely on the size of log you can put on it. It'll take an 18" log, no problem.
