Is this Turkey Oak / Quercus cerris?

Looks too slow grown and dark for Turkey, IMO.

There are plenty leaves on the deck could you not have looked at a few???

Doh! Good idea on looking at the leaves on the deck, that didn't even cross my mind! :blushing:

May have to rummage quite a bit though as this one was overstood by much bigger oaks.

cheers

Did you get any photos of the buds as they usually have scales on them that make them appear 'hairy'. If it is Turkey oak the timber is prone to ring shake and generally no good for milling.

I'll have a look at that too and take a photo. cheers

The leaves around the stem don't looked like turkey oak as normally more triangular lobes. I think it is possible that turkey oak can hybridise with our native oaks, just to confuse things further.....

Yes, I read about them hybriding with other oak varieties. There's a good chance that has happened as there are quite a few much bigger oaks in the same area. So I guess the leaf pattern may not be a good identifier.

Is a bugger because I wanted to use it for the main supports at the front of our barn.... and they will be exposed to the weather so I think I'll need to try for another one.
