Best Way to Take Down a Palm?

Recommended Posts

I found that a large digger and truck works for removing Pheonix Palm if you have the space to work. Beware of the dust that comes out of them as it can contain nasties from bird and rat poop. This can also get on to the spines on the base of the fronds which can cause a bacterial infection if you get spiked by one. I was always advised to wear goggles and a face mask to prevent the dust getting into your eyes, nose and mouth and some heavy duty gloves (gauntlet style) to help prevent getting spiked. I've worked with heaps of guys that have been spiked and some of them have had ongoing problems when the spine hasn't been able to be removed. I just steer clear of the things. One of the worst trees to work on I reckon.

The palms you are dealing with are very tough to maintain much less remove. I have removed palms like the one described by layering 4 to 6" sections at a time from where the froms start down. depending on the thickness of the palm and water content I find this to be the easiest way. Cleaning your equipment always very important esp. with palms since the juices will do a number on the saws. Advice comming to you from SW. Florida USA.

Last week i had to fell 2 cordylines for 2 seperate clients, the first was gobbed and backcut and went over with a few fibres in the chain and round the sprocket. The 2nd one blocked my main saw totally halfway through the backcut, for once i didnt have my back-up saw in the truck,so managed to finish cut with the 200t,and that was almost blocked solid.Quicker to have used an axe.
