Thanks for all the advice above, I haven't tried the 'boring' cut idea, got one to bring down on Wednesday, so I'll give that a bash.

 

Hiabs and the like are a bit out of my league at the mo' just running 2 tippers (Canter & Dyna), a 190 Timberwolf and a 210 Bear Cat but I reckon if cut length-ways to a reasonable size, the chippers would handle it.

Fell, sned, and winch into an f* off great chipper in a oner! Bloody nasty things, great habbitat for all sorts of wee beasties over here (perth) which invariably fall onto you when you're cutting! Cant offer much advice, just sympathy!

dont forget to clean ur saw after . one canariensis i felled rotted half the ali cover off the saw overnight!!!

How I fell them is 40-50% scarf.Then bore cut from the front through to the back,level with the bottom of scarf,bar width.Put in wedge and hammer in.Then backcut with the step being about a matchbox height above the wedge in the back.I find this keeps them from closing up on the bar.

Spike 'em, they won't feel anything through the 'husks'. (see pic)

 

Make sure you don't nick any of the fronds you want to keep, even the smallest cut weakens and can kill a frond

I have never climbed one,I have only pruned them using a polesaw from the ground or from an EWP.They are my least favourite palms to work on.
