can Sirius rope be used as a lanyard?

Howdy all,

 

I was looking on you tube and found a vid of the new haas which is cool but the thing that caught my eye is it looks like the climber has a lanyard made out of Sirius rope.... Can you do this and also what is the friction hitch cord?

 

Here is the vid so you can see what i mean.

 

 

Go to 4 min in and watch a little you will see what I mean.
