Whats the tool called?

I have a Yew trunk that I have cut into thin strips for making place mats out of and I want to engrave them.

I have seen occasionally some items that have had burned in lettering a bit like an engraving on metalwork. Whats the thing called that basically burns / engraves wood?

Also any advise on sealing in the yew wood so that it keeps it's lovely pink luster? It's been down for about a year but is still a bit damp and fragile.

PS: I didn't chop it down.

it is a pyrography burner. i got mine from axminster but lost it in a separation.

you cant (well i couldnt at the time) get the really good one in britain.

i did get mine from axminster power tools and it cost close to £100

best advice is to contact someone who already does it.

We just have one of the small woodburning tools that works like holding a pen.

Sometimes I burn the name of a tree's genus and species on walking sticks I make for fun.

And just sign the reverse with the year.

Have no skill with the artistic nature of woodburning whatsoever. Just use it as a pen that burns letters.
