To be fair, as soon as you are moving its got more go than the landrover (and mine was a fiddled with TD5).

I seem to be averaging about 25mpg with alot of towing and a slightly heavy foot.

The landrover was 10-20mpg.

Its pretty hilly around here, but its no Porlock hill! Wow thats steep!

HI JIM i had LR 90 X TEC chip to 200hp like you said your right my TD CHIP WAS 20/22MPG MAX towing a large trailer but without trailer 28/30mpg if light foot :lol:but i like the TONS OF TQ it had BUT your 25mpg is good if you get that mate i only got 17/20mpg out of our DISCO 3 AUTO with the large caravan on heavy foot :lol:thanks jon

I have the same problem, pulling off in first is just too high geared to be pulling what they say it can safely, nothing worse then having to ride the clutch. I also had to put an adjustable tow bar on as I found the standard one way too low. I also think they 'sit down well' on the back end with even the slightest load.

Having said all of that I'm still chuffed in general with mine. Have a check if you've any recalls due, mine needs 3, only minor things.

. The Landrover is like punishment to drive compared to this. The Landrover is much more practical though, but I think mainly because I wasn't scared to scratch it.

That's exactly where my logic was! Very nearly chopped LR in earlier this year for the DMax. It was like a car to drive, no need to shout, no leaks, no rattling, no headache, just a nice comfortable ride. Didn't do it in the end, I figured it had many "comfort" advantages (including a turning circle that would make a 110 blush) and the wife might actually like driving it, but it ain't a LR and that's all there is to it!

I have pulled 3500kg of generators around for years. I never really mastered the changing on the fly with the landrover especially with a big trailer get it wrong and there are lots of noises underneath. If stuck in traffic on the motorway I used to stick it in low box if the traffic cleared you would have to ditch it in the hard shoulder for a minute. Any slight slope when fully loaded would mean putting it in low especially the TD5 stuff. The jap stuff is ok in low box on loose gravel but will damage the transmission if screwing a big trailer round a corner on tarmac.

Surly the biggest problem with one of these d maxs is that althougth the towing capacity has gone up the gross train weight hasnt? As in if you tow 2.5 tonne you can have a tonne on the truck aswell, but if you tow 3.5, you cant, so you can only move the same weight in material as a truck with a lower capacity anyway??

True but the beauty of the double cabs is flexibility. Nice to drive on a run dont leak water and the heater works.. You can carry passengers and tools. They can tow 3500kg if needed although I found the ride poor with leaf springs on the Navarra as they bounce up and down with a trailer on.

If u want a rugged work horse that moves max weight across rough ground without o licence the defender is still the vehicle to have especially if you only work local. The coil springs are better for towing and the option of low box without axles locked is great for pulling a full trailer away on a hill or crawling for hours in heavy traffic takes the strain off the clutch.
