Growing firewood

Recommended Posts

Ash trees in the photo are about 8 years old. We also have some triandra for basket making. The stools are about 6 years old and the whips get better every year as it all thickens up. The alder planted at the same time (to mark the end of each variety of the willow) was harvested this year for logs. Not much volume but at 10" dia they have been the best performers to date.

We have just germinated some cherry from seed to plant this year along with more alder, syc and an additional variety of Euc.

I wish I had a database, or even recorded stuff with a pen and paper!

10" in 6 years? Wow! :thumbup:Glad I planted 325 of them!

I've put a few clippings from our poplar into pots so hoping they'll take. Didn't cost anything so no loss if they don't.

Have you actually made any baskets with the triandra? What kind of spacing did you plant them at? Mine are at about 30cm in my high density plantation (16 plants) but the ones planted elsewhere are further away from each other.

I'm really hoping my dogwood takes off too

I've had a go but nearly took my eye out in the process so just sell it on now. Spacing originally 1ft but I have stuck a cutting in in between any weaker stools just in case.

Interestingly I put some dogwood in about 7-8 years ago. About half of the planting died off and the remainder struggled to get going. It is growing well now and it had its first pruning a few weeks ago.

Just wondered what you sell your triandra for? Do you sell it as whips or rods? I'm so impatient - wish I'd planted it last year... Would love to see pictures of the willows & dogwoods so I know what to expect. Your inbox is full, by the way
