Show us your Logging Horses

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen, I love seeing working horses, especilly in a woodland environment.

But do some of you Home Counties types even know what a "wet" site is?

I defy any horse to work in a bog, and go where a light, carefully piloted 4wd tractor on flotation tyres will.

Horses for courses I suppose.

PS

looking forward to spending more time watching the horses at this years APF.

All of my horse logging work is carried out in co tyrone and parts of fermanagh which have there fair share of bog. I still use a 4wd tractor to extract with a winch and forwarding trailer where suits. However the reason why i moved into horse logging a few yrs ago was because the tractor wasn't able to travel in a thinning situation. Without a good brash mat a tractor struggles. The horse is able to move between the trees so can alter extraction routes if nessecery. I normally pull with the horse to where a tractor can reach without destroying the site.

Out of interest, did you buy it new? How much was it? Did you get it from Maggie? Looking to get one myself for next winter.

Is it the lack or work or suitable logs that mean it's not being used? I've heard mixed reviews of combi drags so would be interested in your opinion!

Matt

it the lack of time due to uni and in all in house work and it the wrong type of production as its mostly chip or slective felling due to the shoot but if it is an arch you are looking for the norwegins chains are slightly different sized i have strugled to find chain with the same links over here and i have not used the arch much but i like the way the rachets work but i am less sure about the drag as i would look at Morgan Andersson stuff as it seem well made and i would by that over a kombidrag and i dont like the draft angles
