What tree is this?

I don't think it is a Spruce. It could be a young vigorous Abies alba. The growth all seems fresh and new and maybe disguising the more familiar identification chracteristics. Like cones, mature needles with white bands underneath and mature bark.

Wow thanks for the responses guys! Impressed with the knowledge!

 

meteorquake - attached some pics of the top of the tree and of bark from branches. Couldn't get in to the trunk it's so dense in there. As far as I know it has never shed cones. I don't think I've ever found any underneath anyway! or many needles either for that matter!

 

treejrb - the needles are flat and soft yes!

 

If there's any other pics or info you guys need let me know and I'll do my best
