Ok so as some of you may know im off recovering from an operation and have decided to make a start on my coffee tables using Sycamore discs as the tops. What id like to know is how to best go about sanding and preparing them. They are now completely dry and havent split like i originally thought they might have. I have made a template of them both on thin ply to hold them together should they split at all. I have included a picture of the the 2 discs in question. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:001_smile:

Sanding end grain is always more difficult than long g rain. Best advice I have is use a belt sander for the worst if the marks then move on to a random orbit sander, starting at about 80grit and going up in 40s/60s till you get to around 320 grit. It's going to take a while but it seems you have some time on your hands so enjoy

alternative is to get some sanding flap-wheels like these and stick them on your angle grinder.

I bought a backing pad and a box of discs for the angle grinder from my local welding supply place. Very cheap and extremely effective.

£29 planer from lidl at the moment, might prove useful as well. I've used a belt sander which worked a treat on something similar followed by a orbital will finer grit paper.
