Just had a nasty moment towing a fully laden trailer. 1 1/2 ton ish of wood in a 680kg trailer. Had to pull in going up a steep wet back road to let a car past. Brakes on but whole lot (Landrover and trailer) starts sliding back down the hill nearly hitting the car passing me. Trying to get going again up the hill engaged difflock while still slipping about and another car comes up the hill and charges past with stuff all room to spare. Seriously this guy needed his head examined.

The roads are foul at the moment but have never had this happen to me before and took me by surprise. Supposed to be able to tow 3.5 ton with the Landrover but would not fancy trying it after todays experience. Smaller load tomorrow :001_smile:

Did you have it loaded badly? you can make the back of the truck pretty light if the trailer is weighted at the back.

 

Also, though a 90 will technically and legally tow 3500kg, it is very dangerous at anything above about 30mph. I had a few moments in mine when fully laden, maybe slightly over.

Sounds like a pucker clencher!

 

I guess, regardless of the manufacturers' spec, it's all about the rubber on the road and when the road surface is slippery even that ain't gonna save you. And there just isn't any accounting what "the other guy" is going to do.

 

Sounds like a close one and serves as a reminder for me not to just get one more on top!

Don't think it was loaded badly. I had put maybe 450kg of rings in the back so plenty of pressure on the rear tyres. The trailer itself was pretty much evenly weighted over the two axles. I only drive slow so 30mph max but this problem was at a standstill. Proper sweaty moment that I do not wish to repeat.

 

It's hard to know the limits until you go past them.
