Scarpa Pro Ascent. 90% of competition climbers wear them, available from Honey Brothers.

Alternatively you could look at the Aku Croda, from Treeworker.

If you dont want to spend that much, then a pair of walking/scrambling boots will do. Make sure them cover the ankle, and try to avoid metal eyelets as they tend to pull out.

i use a set of over the ankle rock climbing shoes but also got some akus that have never let me down and they seem to be cheaper than the scarpa. also footwear helps but you should be able to learn to footlock in chainsaw boots i found with rec boots it was harder to begin with.

footlocking is 80% technique, but good boots wont make you 20% better! avoid boots with large heels as the rope slips through. at work i wear hiax protectors which i find ok, for footlocking at work, have not competed for a while but i have a pair of salamon boots for other climbing days, which have lasted very well.

craig

p.s. the boot rule for the comps has been changed, make sure that you read the most up to date version, which will also help you understand how the comp is scored. you dont have to place in any event to get into the masters!
