Oh no it works, it catches the log/s and keeps them upright for splitting down further. Can't imagine life without it now!

 

You'll want a low profile jobby, with a width no less than half the length of the log you're using otherwise they can topple out.

I thought I'd give the tyre trick a go recently. Picked up a free scrap tyre from a local part-worn tyre place.

 

It's a lot better than having logs flying all over the place when they split. The tyre also helps to stop the axe so it does less damage to the old scaffolding boards I stand the logs and tyre on - especially when I miss the log I was aiming for.

I need a new chopping block and I'm definitely going to find something to stop the wood flying off. I had to turn my set up round as the oak I was splitting the other day nearly made it over the wall into next door's garden. I had a nice round of poplar but it's rotted away so something a bit more durable next time.
