There's a common variety of Cryptomeria japonica which has a strange, coral-like growth pattern which is caused by fasciation Cryptomeria japonica 'Cristata'

 

Clearly a marketable feature in some instances.

Yes, but a tricky one to manage! Noted in the attached tale by Nora Bryan.

A most enjoyable read. Do you know what happen if a fasciated twig is allowed to keep growing for a few years?
Yes, there's nothing like sexual tension to heighten interest. Please send Nora your response--she needs to write another!

 

ime, fasciated tips don't grow fast. Sometimes they divide further and twist more. I like leaving them as curiosities, for the owner to groove on. But some will have none of such uncontrolled behaviour in their gardens. :001_rolleyes:
