ideas for storing split logs

I have cut and split around 40 bulk bags of firewood, they are on pallets in the yard and have a pallet on top of each bag then another bag on top. I have had these covered up with a good quality tarpaulin but when i went to deliver some yesterday they are soaked! there seems to be loads on condensation.

How do others store the logs? either in bags or lose.

We store in vented bulk bags stacked on pallets undercover in a barn. Can stack about 3 high, before the stack becomes unstable. Looking at switching the purpose built log crates made by http://www.hktimbers.com, as these can be stacked much higher. Matt

perhaps had the tarp too tight/close . They need to " breath " .

The logs will sweat and create condensation, without adequate ventilation the logs will start to go mouldy. This is from experience :-)

Ive been thinking of the wooden crate way or ibc containers.

I had mine outside all summer with a tarp thrown over just the top when there was wet weather due. Then bring inside for the winter.

Had to leave a few outside under a tarp at the start of winter as not enough room inside but they didn't go mouldy as the wood was nice and dry before it was covered over!

How much do these cost? I'm guessing a lot more than bags

Store mine in metal stillages and large wooden potato crates

 

Usually put them in stillages stacked 4 high once ringed up and then bring these down and split in to potato crates which hold about 1.5-2 cube (never actually measured)

 

I do only split for my own use and go through about 20 cube a year

 

Potato crates I got from a local potato merchant for £10 each once they get battered around and they replace them they sell off the old ones few nails and a couple of replacement planks and they do me fine

If its a clear tarp you will get lots of condensation also the sides need to be kept open with maybe a foot or so overhang.

Ibc container s are the best way we have found take the bottles out first ..
