Finally had time to have a proper go on the new lathe. This birch blank hadn't stored very well but thought it'll do for a practice.

The rim wasn't finished very well and I still get some end grain tearing. I maybe could have cleaned it up better with the scraper but I was starting to lose my nerve as I've never gone that thin before. 7" diameter

Not sure it'll survive, it's currently wrapped in cling film in the coolest room in the house. Seen it on YouTube lol60848ccfd9aed4958b40afad50d060d9.jpg

there is alot of endgrain tearout on that one mick.

 

 

 

you should have no need for tidying it up with a scraper, that should be done with a gouge.

 

 

 

I know I should be able to get a good finish of the gouge mate. I don't know if my sharpening is to blame
