Watching /assisting hedgelaying near Bristol?

Hi all

Bit of a long shot perhaps, but was just wondering - does anyone from here lay hedges near Bristol? I'd love to watch / have a go or just help out labouring / tending the fire (if I'd be any use) for a day or so at some point... :confused1: I can use a chainsaw (though I'm not certified), hand saw, etc. and I'm not bad at fires! I've got a chainsaw and a bow-saw and a bill hook of some form.

Don't have any hedges to do myself, but hopefully one day! (And don't think it's really worth my going on a course at this stage as I just fancy giving it a go / getting out in the fresh air...)

Cheers,

Giles

There is a beginners course in jan/feb usually just south of bristol (last one was near winford/dundry). Its held over 6 saturdays, costing £30. You dont have to commit tp every saturday, i did 4 out of the 6 saturdays and still got a good understanding of the craft.

My landlord helps organise it, i'll ask him for dates if you want.

Thanks Hedge. Hampshire would be a bit of a trek - don't come anywhere near Bristol do you?! (Free is better than paid for, especially while I'm not sure how into it I'll get...)

Alex, forgot to ask - would that be £30 a session? (Probably yes, when I think about it! I initially thought that £30 for 6 sessions looked like very good value!)

no i do not most of my work is in hampshire exept if he comes back a job in durham. and the style we lay is predominate in this part of the land.

and find that most customers look for a local cutter. as they can get the materials for hedges local so not a treck to bring them. never say will not go elsewhere but as yet not been asked over that part of the country

In that case, that is good value! And Dundry is pretty close to me - hope it can be held there again! :)

Yes, please let me have the details when you know them..

Cheers.

I will do - would be good to see a fellow arbtalker there. I'll be going again next time as it's the only time i get to lay hedges really, unless I can pick up a bit of paid work in the future.

It's well worth it, you have 1 on 1 tuition from really experienced hedge layers, including a national champion :)
