Hi there, there's people on here more qualified to answer than me but i've made some walking sticks and so will add my 10p worth.

If you're taking the time to make a walking stick properly make sure its straight. you can add heat to a stick and manipulate it straight. either with a steamer or i've done it with a tea towel in the past. can take a while without some kind of jig but it is do'able.

Then you'll need need a colar which forms the link between the stick and the handle. this sits around a short threaded bar. I use M8 bar for this. Pre drill the hole or it'll split your stick.

Finish it off with a ferrule which will protect the end of your stick. You can get nice ones but i just stick rubber ones on.

Not sure if that helps and like i said some of the other fellas on here probably have much more to add than what i can.

Cheers

Normally they use threaded bar, drill holes in both shank and handle, glue using arildite or similar glue, file and sand to suit

as above i use araldite and a cut down 8mm bolt threaded bit only

use a ferrule on the bottom of stick it saves wear to the wood

Beaten to it

Thank you for the help folks and I think I will grab a copy of that book also! I have been looking at using a household steamer and piping to steam and straighten sticks but the handles are giving me no end of grief! It is for my Dad who is very ill so I would rather not cock it up and add a fall to his situation :blushing:
