What's caused this?

Hi folks, I've been working on a log planter this morning and discovered strange patterns under the bark as I stripped it. There were no marks on the outside but I think its either Ivy or a bug of some sort.

 

The picture don't really do it justice as it's quite a nice pattern :001_smile:

 

Anyone advise what's caused it please.

Yes it's the breeding galleries of a beetle or weevil, the main gallery is where the eggs were laid and the ones running away are as the grub feeds itself on the cambium or phloem before emerging.
