Short Gaff Vs. Long Gaffs

Thinking about changing my Pole Gaffs to something shorter. Just wondered if anyone had any opinions.

I've always used the pole gaffs but been discussed that shorter gaffs would be more beneficial for overall stability, most of the length is redundant anyway?

I was using long gaffs for abit, but found them unstable in hardwood as you tend to rock on the gaff and gaff out more.

Also found them harder to climb on once dismantling in the crown around limbs as were difficult to dig in around stems and branch collars due to their length, were un comfy.

On the plus side long gaffs are awesome in ivy covered trees as you can gaff through the ivy and get at least a small bit of them into the bark underneath!

short spikes are better for general work IMO however long gaffs have advantages in soft deep bark and ivy :)

Short gaffs are more suited to the trees in this country 95% of the time and the other 5% I just get by with them. Unless your sectioning a lot of big pines or willies i'd certainly recommend the short ones.

iv never sectioned a big willy, do you do many of those?
