Anybody do any cabling and bracing in Britain?

Howdy cousins!

I've invented a new cabling alignment tool, I call them cabling alignment tubes.

They are very handy for ensuring the holes you drill into trunks and leaders for your cabling hardware are in perfect alignment with the lay of the cable.

Invented around xmas 08.

And here's the tool being used in an old mature Torrey pine tree on the bay in San Diego, CA.

The tubes are only used to get 3/8ths pilot holes about 8 inches deep at the correct angle. A typical two stroke drill motor is used to enlarge and push the hole all the way through at a perfectly true and straight angle for throughbolt hardware installation.

What do you think cousins?

If you're serious about this as a commercial 'invention' you need to take out patents - now! Otherwise the first mechanically-minded YouTube watcher could grab the idea off you. It may be good to withdraw the vid from there until you have a patent pending. I'm not qualified to comment on the worth of the tool but some here are. Good luck whatever.

Quite apart from any debate about the invasive nature of cable bracing, it is simply such a faff compared to the systems developed by Wessoly et al.....

Here in the U.K. our British Standard ( BS 3998 ) Recommendations for treework still only has scope enough to consider the cable bracing techniques. We continue to anticipate an updated document........

In the meantime then, I would expect that there are more than a handful of technicians for whom your "tool" may have some appeal.

I'm very familiar with patents, and patent laws. The tool is now in the public domain, and any company that wishes to can manufacture alignment tube kits and sell them anywhere in the world, though none will be able to claim any patent rights.

It is my invention, a gift to the tree industry worldwide, and proof that some folks don't worship leveraged profits and cornered markets.

Anyone wishing to fab their own alignment tubes can do so. If they need any help to optimize their design and use the correct type of drill bits to minimize acute angle deflection, I'll be happy to provide that info to them for free, just ask and it's yours cousins.

Jomoco,

I'm all for invasive cabling as it makes the tree stronger if done properly. The alignment tool is an excellent idea, can't believe anyone hasn't thought of it before.

Have you had a lot of success with it?

Over two dozen perfectly aligned cables installed so far.

After figuring out that a very sharp pointy triangular flat drill bit was a must to initiate a pilot hole at acute angles, it has worked great.

Next phase for me is getting rid of the air drill and adapting an 18 volt cordless to the application. A quick change drill chuck would be sweet too.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.

Nice idea, have you heard of the "Atom" chainsaw drill attachment?
